Our latest seller update is here—we’re creating a better buyer experience.

The title of eBays latest message informing sellers they are crap and buyers mean everything to them. Love how it's so blatantly clear in making that point.

    Hi Joe,

At eBay, we strive to make our policies clear and our services easy to use. As part of that commitment, we’re announcing some changes to the eBay User Agreement.

Our updated User Agreement will take effect on May 9, 2017 for new users and on June 20, 2017 for all other users. The updated User Agreement was posted on eBay.com on May 9, 2017.

Key updates to the eBay User Agreement:
We've made it clearer how we address attempts to bypass our policy on Offers to buy or sell outside eBay.

We may scan and block member-to-member messages sent through our platform to prevent fraud or violations of our polcies.

We may automatically renew your fixed-price listings unless your listing sells out or you cancel your listing.

If you use our product catalog information in your listing, we may update this information in your listing when we update our catalog.

We've made some changes to our company structure that are reflected in the eBay entities you are contracting with when using eBay.

Thank you for being a part of the eBay community.

    Sincerely,
    The eBay team

You beat me to the punch as thread thoughts go. LOL I was just about to start one.

Thanks for posting the message content, but the title says enough for me.
Interpreted...As a seller you are crap and have no backing or protection whatsoever, sell at your own risk.

The main gist seems to be that they are trying to crack down harder on those who buy and sell outside of eBay in order to evade eBay's ever-increasing/changing fees.

Good luck with fixing 20 years of learned behavior.... >:)

Of course if you have the seller's email addy from a prior transaction, then there's no need to use the eBay message system.

While I agree that in general buyers have the upper hand over sellers, I don't see anything unreasonable towards sellers in the most recent update. What are you referring to specifically?

Ebay loves you and wants you to bend over for them.

    eBay doesn't need coin listings.

  • StorkStork Posts: 5,207 ✭✭✭✭✭

IIRC the verbiage was a little less clear before. At least it is specific about not using the eBay platform to arrange off eBay deals, which is not unreasonable for them.

Prior language seemed to imply or allow for them not distinguishing just how you found each other--and an extremist interpretation would be that they were entitled to a cut of a coin sold even if it was to be found in multiple venues and sold elsewhere.

Sounds nuts, but then when does that stop a corporation from a money grab (ahem, Apple and eBooks and demanding a 30% cut for any book sold in app...when that 30% also had just become the cut for the 'agency model' and Apple lost a $450 million antitrust case over that one, in part thanks to Job's autobiography where he pretty much laid out how he was going to make it so).

My only real concern would be that in the links to un acceptable contact they state that you cannot use information obtained using eBay. So do they have recourse if you use the email after the sale for future purchases.
Also they stipulate the allowed rules for ending listings early and fees associated. Many of us sell on multiple platforms so I would be concerned that they try to charge me a fee for ending items sold at shows etc. Other than that it doesn't seem much different.

I don't see a big deal from the posted information.
I haven't received it on my accounts yet, but even if I did/do, then it wouldn't/won't bother me.

While I don't like the automatic extensions for fixed priced listings, those are easy enough to cancel. Just be on top of your account. If you can't do that, don't sell until you do.

There's enough that ebay imposes/does that is valid to complain about.....this one? No.

They are reading your messages. I got a warning the other day based on a message a buyer sent, trying to buy off eBay.

They are 100% monitoring messages very closely. I've received not one, but two phonecalls from Ebay in the past week inquiring if I understood their policy on off ebay sales. One was for sending a prospective buyer my phone number through the ebay message system. Another was for a buyer making a blatant offer to me for a direct through paypal deal.

Actually, no but I haven't sold anything for a few weeks. I'll have to check the next time. In the meantime, I'd better go back through my old eBay sales records and record everyone's email address in case I need to contact them outside of eBay! >:)

For those selling on eBay, do you also have a website that is easy to find based on the eBay listing/username info? I've used that to find the sellers website and then contact them directly. Do you ever hear from potential buyers who have done this? I view it as a win-win as the sellers are usually willing to knock at least a couple percent off ( I usually offer to split the savings of the eBay cut).

I haven't checked as a buyer. As a seller my most recent do not have an email address in the ebay notification or the paypal notification.

So eBay is contacting you the seller because of a message someone else instigated? I would have some choice (not to be typed here) words with anyone stupid enough to call me out on something done by a third person.

I got the message and I don't sell. I also got a warning trying to ask a question as the system thought I was trying to go outside of ebay. I just re-worded the question and asked anyway. I was not trying to make any deal, just asking a question.

That was 2 days before they sent me the message about the great improvements they are making.

I know there are a few few folks here who navigate the inherent problems, restrictions, and fees structure well efficiently enough to run a healthy business.

For the majority of folks, their innovative, ground-breaking business model has come.......... and gone. There are too many issues and too much drama now to make it attractive to this casual buyer/seller.

Still no seller fees if a listing without a bid is ended earlier, correct?

I received three PayPal payments in the last three days and notice that in addition to the email I receive from PayPal, which includes the email address of the person making the payment I have also received a email from eBay letting me know I have been paid containing a link to print the shipping label and does not contain the email address of the person making the payment. I don't remember getting these emails from eBay in the past, just the one from PayPal which always contained the email address.

eBay spun off PayPal as a separate company. I would assume you will always be able to log into your PayPal account and see the email address of the payer.

Wrong! Who gets a fee that comes out of their account, the buyer or the seller? The buyer is paying for what they choose to purchase, the seller has no choice if they choose to use eBay. I dont mind a fee, but 13% between PP and eBay...really? How did they survive when they charged 3%?

Fair enough but where is the competition? Selling fees on a $2000 coin have quarduped in a decade (with a store) yet no viable entity has stepped up to the plate. Where is Google or Facebook or Microsoft? A bit of collusion perhaps as they did with there upper tier employees.

A known politician was paid $320,000 for an Ebay speaking engagement. The whole operation stinks top to bottom.
