A nice pickup: 1874 Trade $1 AU, toned. ***Grade posted in OP***

This came up on Ebay as a BIN or BO last Monday. I made an offer; he countered, and I accepted. With the enhanced 10% Ebay Bucks at the time it cost me $240. It arrived yesterday and I was quite happy. The seller's pics weren't very good, but good enough to show that the coin had great detail. The surfaces would have to wait until I had it in hand. Well, I'm quite pleased! Beautifully toned with unmarked surfaces and only the slightest high point wear on Liberty's breast (the head is somewhat weakly struck, which is not uncommon). It will go 55 for sure with a good shot at 58 IMO. The 1874 Philadelphia is a tougher date than one might imagine based on the mintage - check the pops.
The grade just posted - AU55! The True View image really brings out the color much better than my feeble attempts:

That's a great find on a tough date in the series, congrats!
Well done indeed!
Though buying raw Trade dollars on eBay can be risky, it looks like it paid off very well for you, and of course your extensive experience helped.
.
Yes, very well done.
Congrats. Great look to it.

A good roll of the dice! I would be too chicken.
The 74-P is very, very tough to find. Yours looks nice and if you can get it into a problem-free PCGS holder, you've made a steal at $240.

That's a great find for the price. Let us know how it grades.
Thanks, I certainly will. It will go in with my next batch, which might be a few months unless I come upon some more nice picks soon...

That is a nice Trade Dollar.... good pick up.... Cheers, RickO
Nice pick-up there. I would have passed it by, figuring it was made in Shanghai last month.
Nice score! Looks really nice for the price.
Bump for adding grade in OP

When the coin looks much better than the giving
grade, you know you did well...sweet coin.
Gem Cir for sure, nice coin. I got my AU55 in similar fashion and it is still one of my favs due to similar reasons you stated.

Nice coin
Very nice.
That is one of the more attractive AU trade dollars that I've seen, and I would have paid much more to have that one for my 7070. Seems like most are dipped, dinged, and hairlined, so the hole has been occupied by a crusty XF for many years.
Great coin, great date, what's not to love. Congrats on the grade.
