How Strange to see the "P" mint mark on new Lincolns

ambro51ambro51 Posts: 13,955 ✭✭✭✭✭

Yes here on the East coast a mere 46 miles from the Mint I got my first 2017 cent from Wawa. ....most of my change comes from here and they dispense from a machine. Guarda supplies their coins. Fine months in to get one, and How Odd to see a mint marked fresh coin here. Denver mint issues are Really Scarce here, especially very recent years. What exactly IS the logic in needing to mint mark the cent after 224 years of issues? Anyway, odd to see a P

I was at the store and got two fresh out of a roll in change. It is so odd looking that I had to keep them. How many years with no P?

Successful BST deals with mustangt and jesbroken. Now EVERYTHING is for sale.

As far as I know, there has never been a cent minted with a "P" mint mark since the beginning of the US Mint...much longer than 108 years.

Yes. That is correct. It is the first time in 225-year history of minting cents

Perhaps longer if you count the Fugio cents (although they weren't made in Philadelphia)

Yes... 225 years... and, if the Mint is true to their word, it will be the last.... So, I saved a couple that I got from change... I saw the clerk 'pop' the roll.... Cheers, RickO

I assumed we were talking about the Lincoln cent design...since there were never any mint marks on large cents

Has the Mint actually said it will be a 1 year type? If so I am buying more rolls.

So when will we start seeing the "no P" errors?

When the crooks start removing the P.

One would have thought they would have started that tradition in 1892 or 1992.

I actually read somewhere that the Philadelphia mint will be closing after this year.

    Stop producing penny may be.

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

I do not believe the Philadelphia mint will be closing..... certainly that would be a major announcement. Cheers, RickO

I didn't know that this was happening and thought for sure that ambro51 was pulling something!

I guess these will have the same popularity as the "original alloy" cents of the 2009 sets. Hot item then off to never never land in 6 months or so.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

No doubt there will be multi-millions of these.... I see no future (within the lifetimes of even grandchildren) value to these, with the possible exception of MS/PR70 CAM, DCAM PCGS slabbed coins...Those may provide a premium.... :) Cheers, RickO

I sure hope this is a "1-and-done" event. My eyes are bad enough already and truly dislike the minescule P's on the other denominations.......... I found my first and only 2017 "P" cent face-down on the floor near a register at my local supermarket. I then stopped by my local bank & asked if they have any "new" rolls of cents, nickels, dimes, etc, but was told "no, we just have old rolls". But after finishing other business with them, I went back to a teller and asked for a few rolls of each anyway, so I could do some searching for missing dates. And what do you know? They gave me a roll of 2017-P dimes & a total of 4 rolls of 2017-"P" pennies!! Saved 3 of the penny rolls for myself & the boys, and cracked-open the 4th to fill our Whitman folder holes.

So now I have some extra singles of 2017-P pennies & dimes, and would be more than happy to trade with someone who has extra 2017 "D" mints (and/or a few left-over P & D mints from recent years). We still need the following to fill holes in our folders:

    ATB $.25:
    2017: Effigy Mounds P&D (4 each), Frederick Douglass-D (4)
    2016: Shawnee-D (2), Harper's Ferry-D (2), Roosevelt Park-P&D (3 each), Ft. Sumter-D (2)
    2011: Olympic-D (1), & Vicksburg-D (1)
    2009: Puerto Rico-P (1)

    ROOSEVELT $.10: 2017-D (1)

    JEFF.$.05: 2016-D (1) 2017-P&D (4 each)

    LINCOLN $.01 : 2017-D (1)

    Thanks!

the p stands for “plain” not Philadelphia, just like the 1922 cent with no mint mark! just makes it a bit more definitive this way. We will now refer to the 2017 cents with a “p” as the 1922 “plain” pennies.
