If you have the funds, I guess it doesn't matter. Some people go to Vegas and dump 10s of thousands of dollars. This guy did it in the comfort of his home. Awesome to see a 52 pack ripped though. It looks legit. You could tell he was nervous as hell.

Geez, just cut the side seal of the GAI holder after cutting the flip off. The way he cut that 52 pack out, he may have damaged those corners pulling the pack out.

The original seller mentions that the pack would not cross to PSA. I'm curious if that meant PSA deemed it tampered with or if he meant they would grade it lower than the GAI 6.5.

The listing description, which seems intentionally ambiguous to me, seems to imply the former, though he attempts to temper that by stating the pack was purchased "from a well known unopened collector." He also probably didn't want to cut the pack out of the holder to submit it to PSA, which is usually recommended by Steve to confirm authenticity, especially for a pack of this magnitude. Tough to tell for sure by simply watching a video.

A couple of things that would indicate that the pack was authentic is that all 5 cards out of the pack were similarly cut with same corner ding indicating the pack had likely been dropped or dinged at some point. Also the wrapper around the gum inside the pack would be very difficult for a resealer to obtain.

Perhaps Jmoran is familiar with sequence of cards off the sheet to confirm if cards were correct.

Scott (aka dropthepuck20, the seller of the pack on ebay) had this pack for many years and took it with him from show to show along with the rest of his pack inventory. I held the pack in hand at least once, probably a couple times, most recently around 2-3 years ago and he and I were discussing it. IIRC he said Steve wouldn't cross it because of the back seal--I think he didn't like the way it looked. I don't think the seal was popped though but the reason it wouldn't cross had something to do with the seal. Was still a beautiful, clean, great looking pack though with great eye appeal that I thought about buying for a moment or two while I had it in hand. Needless to say if I win the one in ML I will not be opening it!

what series was the pack from? It had to be the last series to include Mantle right?

First series. All the cards are in the 1-80 number range. At least that and the fact that the backs aren't different colors (red and black) lend some provenance.

I just found this thread again. Thanks for the info. Interesting about the seal. I wonder if someone had carefully peeled back the seal to peak inside without necessarily opening it.

Steve sometimes will not OK the cross to PSA due to being unable to see the corner folds and seam thru the GAI holder. I had (have) a '57 pack that he would not cross. I got the OK from the seller (Ken M) to have Steve bust it and make a determination. He did and it now sits in a PSA-7 holder.

couple of comments on this rip--agree he shld've used the blue gloves--at least his fingernails are clean--and it is too F'gn boring w/o voices-music-a dog barking--whatever--livin' the next one up!

the way the seal and the folds opened it looked legit to me. but man that guy was shaking which made it a little tough. the gum stain on the back card looked good and the cards looked very consistent. seems like it was legit to me. I too had also seen this pack in hand a few times and it looked ok to me when I viewed it in hand.

We have a board member here with a pack and 2 Mantles - and a complete raw set. It's something to behold.

Never "getting around" to picking up #311 when it was more in my ball park is a major regret.

Also, not picking up a pack from Mark Murphy when he bought a bunch of sweet 8 pack cellos from a little old lady.

This was around 1994 or so? He had some packs in SCD for 1700 bucks - would look great in my collection - not to open - not to sell - just good ole "pride" of ownership I guess.
