Central States Coin Show Report

I got to the show about 11:00 this morning. The parking lot was jammed full and my walk in the high winds and blustery conditions was greater than I'd have preferred. Once inside I was pleased to see there was no wait to register and enter.

The bourse was roughly the size of 2 football fields in size. It looked like just about everyone was present and set up. Very few empty tables. There were plenty of public attendees when I arrived. I met a few of the people I usually see at these things. Everyone appeared to still be interested and enthusiastic.

Seemed like there was a lot more gold offered as well as high end toners. More than you typically see. The PCGS table had a line of about 10 people waiting to write out submissions early in the day.

There was plenty of buying and selling from my point of view. I'm one of those guys that will look a show over before I buy anything normally, however, I have a Franklin set I've been working on that has but 2 holes. I found a nice 1948 "P" that's a nice original white coin with "pop" in high MS 64 IMO. It was hammered on the reverse, no question about FBL. Since that was one of the holes I needed to fill to allow me to sleep at night I pulled the trigger on this $30 coin.

In talking to some Dealer friends they indicated that their sales (mostly slabbed CC dollars) were brisk. They were happy and in a buying mood so I sold them some coins I've tried to sell on E-Bay for 2 cycles without success. I don't mind letting them have the margin and a few percent rather than leave them on E-Bay through the show and still find no buyers. It's a bird in hand kind of thing and now I have cash to buy upon my return tomorrow.

I picked up a free Heritage Auction catalog at their table for the US coin auction. I'll look it over tonight and dream only to have my hopes dashed when I log in and see the prices the coins I like are bid up to.

I'll follow up after my return trip tomorrow.

Great report! I noticed some of the same things as you did.
Congrats on the Franklin! It sounds like it is raw? That was a set I put together as well. Mine is UNC, but most aren't FBL. It's a fun and achievable set that looks great in an album!

    Thanks for the report.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

It is always a great day at a coin show, especially when you can fill a hole in your collection...and pick up some "walkin' around" money. Nice report.

Saw a few beautifully toned Mercury Dimes that were going for moon money. I'm going back this morning and will drop off some coins for messydesk to professionally image. I've posed my own pictures of some of these but as they say, "similar, but different".

Returned today to achieve a few goals I'd set for myself after looking things over yesterday. I had (member) messydesk image 5 coins that needed the touch of a professional. He'll forward the images to me in an E-Mail when he gets through with the show and can catch his breath. The coins don't amount to a great deal of money but they would be impossible to replace because the toning is so unusual.

The show itself seemed slower today than yesterday. Much less Dealer to Dealer, which is fine by me. I absolutely despise when Dealers have boxes, brief cases, Greysheets and slabs scattered all over the glass preventing the public from viewing what's for sale. What's even worse is the inconvenience you create when you spot something you'd like to look at. I generally just walk right on by.

I normally have a hard time buying anything at shows because I refuse to overpay 2x,3x a coin's actual value. I surprised myself by buying 3 more Franklin's from Salt City Coins. Their prices were very fair and the coins were originals. I brought a few coins to sell again today but never even pulled them from my pocket. Widgets are very hard to sell under great circumstances. Once the Dealers get done buying early, they become even harder to sell as a show drags on.

I looked over the Heritage catalog but there was nothing in my end of the pool I could see for what remained to the auctions.

Doubt I'll be going back tomorrow since some Dealers will be in the starting blocks waiting for the gun to go off by noon tomorrow to head home.

Nice report. Speaking of toned coins. Did you happen to journey over to the far end, near the front (at one's right when you first walk in). I think the Dealer's name was Allen? His Slabbed Jefferson Nickels were as blue as blue can be! I mean a DEEP BLUE! I never seen a coin the color blue in all my years of collecting. They had to be a true tone because of it being in a PCGS holder. :o I didn't even bother asking him, how much? He probably would had told me, for Blue Moon Money!
    Here is an example;

"Jesus died for you and for me, Thank you,Jesus"!!!

The 1960 thru 1963 Proof Nickels can exhibit some wonderful colors. I have a couple black, grey, blue nickels as an example. They are pretty easy to find and are rarely encapsulated because they are so cheap.

That deep blue is over the top. If it's real, it's real cool!!

That picture above is from Google. The one's he had at the show were even more Bluer!

"Jesus died for you and for me, Thank you,Jesus"!!!

@joeykoins Blue toned Jefferson Nickels are known to come from the 1960s Proof Sets (and some from the late 1950s). Something in the packaging combined with the composition of the nickel causes the toning.
I have seen some sell in the $250-$350 range (ebay and Great Collections) and a few dealers at the show were asking similar prices.

I believe that! That's the reason I didn't even bother to ask a price. LOL

It's always good to not let the nice people on eBay rip your coins.

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

Wow... I guess I should pull out some of my '60's mint sets and see if I have any of these blue bombers... at those prices I may have to break my own standard and sell something :D Cheers, RickO
