Just witnessed a new level of humor in TPG service.

Apparently down the block, they're now offering "O.S.V." That's "Original Set Verification". You can have your early OGP Mint sets and Proof sets graded and verified as to original placement in the OGP. For realz, as I Just can't make this stuff up.
I wonder if the forensics are proprietary ?

I think I read about that last year. Whatever pays the light bill. Look at how collectors love the colorful custom labels.
Not sure anything beats the "first strike" nomenclature for pure uselessness....
It's a separate company which has joined with ANACS to provide this service. They verify the set, then ANACS slabs the coins and the original cardboard.

I guess at least you can claim they weren't "processed" in any way between leaving the mint, and being slabbed...so you've got THAT going for you....
I once again have to thank the TPGs for providing another super valuable service. I just do not know how we collectors ever managed before the recent innovations by the TPGs.

This service is not cost effective IMO.
This is something to ponder

Is this a precursor to authenticating "un-searched" rolls on eBay?
Though I can undercut them. For only a buck I'll tell you it isn't un-searched.
They launched this two years ago. The ANACS holder for the sets is pretty nice, and all packaging is preserved, sealed, and labeled corresponding to the coins. If another company (OSV) wants to attach their imprimatur on the sets being original, and not reassembled, and has market credibility in their assessment of originality, then there are a lot of products that are far sillier than this one.

Based on the number of current auctions at GreatCollections, it appears to have at least a few people that are interested in these type of sets. I think the cost is $10 per coin for the grading fee at the economy service level.

Some of the completed auctions sold at a big premium to GS ask.

There are few on ebay.
Mostly those newly discovered US MInt Sets from the early 1940's.
It would be a great idea mainly for US MInt Sets.
A great way to verify it's an original, un-messed-with coin set.

Let's wait ten years from now & see if we're still laughing.
The way collectors will be fawning over these like Generation 1.0 PCGS, Black NGC & Doilies.
Someone will be laughing all the way to the Bank.
The hot product of the not too distant future..... Cheers, RickO
In about 2005 or 2006, there were quite a bit of disparaging comments here on how ANACS had a details grade and identified the problem on the holder. Most here thought that a problem coin should never be slabbed, and certainly our host would never do that.
I can see the value in the service, however IMO it is not very cost effective.
I'm still waiting for someone to reveal the forensics that would confirm that any coin is an original placement in the packaging.

I like your avatar. Go Wildcats! To go along with the thread, I agree that this up there (or down there) with "First Strike".
I miss the old forum. It had a "Lame!" emoticon.
These new ones are... well... lame.
OSV doesn't say, beyond "How is a set determined to be original?
There are many factors that are weighed in the evaluation including the following: Are the envelopes and cardboard holders from the era? Have any of the coins been replaced? Is the toning appropriate and consistent on the individual boards?"
