My fun Buffalo nickel project for this afternoon; UPDATE IN MY LAST POST
A senior member of our small CT coin club called me yesterday and said he finally located his childhood Buffalo nickel set that was hiding in his basement for years. This set was purchased intact for $20 in 1948. Knowing of my interest in Buffalos, he's asked me to remove them from the deteriorated and mold-covered Whitman, check for varieties and place them in a new album. Going to set up a worktable outside (finally have some decent weather) get a new can of acetone and give them a bath. Tried a couple of test coins and they look 100% better. No 3-leg or O/D, but the keys 13D&S TY 2, 15-S and 21-24 and 26S are all full dates mainly in the G-F range, and there are a bunch of full horn pieces too. These are the before pictures, Will post the afters when I've finished.

did you check out the 1916 for a big doubled date yet??
a.k.a "The BUFFINATOR"
WOW...........talk about original. What a neat project you have ahead of you. I spotted some key dates in mid-grade. That's a heck of a nice set.

I started collecting coins as a kid when my grandfather gave me a bunch of buffalo nickels in similar condition. Never filled the album though. Looking forward to your after photos.

Really a nice set
Very nice!
UPDATE, BUT FIRST A RANT. Does anybody else have trouble posting multiple photos in sequence? GEEZ, what a PITA. I'm giving up and just letting it rip. I Know you guys will figure out which is which.
Now back to the scheduled post.
Most of the coins cleaned up decently with acetone, and in some cases,an acetone-dipped Q-tip. Others were in direct contact with the mold that infiltrated the old holder and still show staining. But overall, I'm pleased with the results. No varieties but the 1918-D, one of the stained coins, shows a nice die break through the date.
I think my friend is going to be pleased with his rediscovered collection and how it's appreciated in value since 1948.
I think that is a very nice set. And the acetone bath helped them a lot.
One thing I found interesting about the old folder.......on the mintages they used fractions when it was half, but decimals when it was anything else. I wonder if they had a reason for that?
Very nice .... That set of Buffs cleaned up nice with the acetone bath... They look great in the new album... Your friend should be very happy.... Cheers, RickO
Very very Nice completed project, and @GaCoinGuy ....That is a very interesting observation, my Jefferson Whitman uses decimal [.5] for the half millions ??
Perhaps they were short on typeset ?

I guess that is one of placing the buff's in a coin album...reverse (mint mark visible) side out.
Very dramatic results from the acetone bath!
How about those "extras"? Anything particular about those?

I liked the original presentation with the mint marks facing forward.
I noticed that yesterday but forgot to comment on it.
