Explain your most recent coin return to a dealer (Ebay included).

Did you anticipate the return before you received it?

How long from the time of receipt did you decide to send it back (or head back to the store).

Any grief from the seller?

Why in the world would I buy a coin that I was planning on sending back before I even saw it?

Between the purchase/auction win and receipt of the coin folks have been known to have second thoughts.....

Most recent was a toned Morgan dollar that was not photographically accurate or even close when examined in hand. Now I know Ebay photos for "colorful" coins have been juiced for years. Not all of them are and sometimes you get lucky and get a coin that is better in hand. But no, if it dead wrong... I return it with relish mostly to discourage the practice of misrepresenting a coin.

No I won't. It cost too much to send it back. Lost money but got a coin that pleases me more.

Cheap coin but was better than picture. Seller "forgot" to say it was bent. Would have kept otherwise. No problem from seller. Refunded all costs, including return ship

I purchased a lot of coins during the past year or so. Returned just 3 coins. One had a HUGE fingerprint that was more prominent, in hand. The other two had spots. One had a dark spot that looked much worse, in hand, than in the photos. The other had white haze that couldn't even be seen in the photo.

1879-s Morgan......bad pic and it looked like a reverse of '78. Even had my wife look at it (ebay) and she agreed. Got it and was pretty disappointed as it was the '79 reverse. Several others thought the same as bid was $140 or so. Returned no problem. Seller still trying to sell with same pics and I even sent him a nice note and explanation with return. Deaf ears.

saw an apparently choice AU 1829 half dime for sale raw on ebay that looked like a decent buy for $200. Bought it and discovered why the seller used ever-so-slightly-fuzzy photos. Signs of cleaning under the otherwise nice toning. Returned it same day as I received it. Zero problems with the seller's handling of the return.

I learned a few weeks later that a fellow half dime collector purchased the coin shortly after I returned it and he is keeping it, he didn't mind the problems for his set.

My most recent return about a month ago was for a 1955 D Washington quarter that was graded MS66 and described as bright white. I got the coin to find out that it was bright white but had a hazy film all over it. The return was easy, however the seller relisted the item without making any changes to the listing which I thought was irritating because they did not disclose the haze. Unfortunately this was from a well known dealer and makes it worse IMO.

I'm not touching this one :D

bought a 2008 W unc. ASE on ebay. Pic showed a reverse of '07, but received a reverse of '08. Seller's reply was that he used a "stock pic." He was not happy with me for the refund but he did relist it with the same incorrect reverse pic. I suspect he knew what he was doing and was looking for a buyer who would not bother to return.

I was most disappointed recently when I won two 1939 proof nickels in separate auctions. Both had terrible photos.
One was described as a reverse of 1940 variety, it was not an R40. It was rev 38 with serious hair lines.
Second win was also with bad photos, coin looked great in the dark... then with light it seemed like someone used a wire brush top to bottom, like an old Vegas silver dollar. Don't even know how it got so many vertical hairlines.
I politely requested a return from each seller and sent the coins back got refunds no problem.

Worst return ever, one that got me blocked as a buyer, was a few months ago. I ordered a pcgs 1940 S nickel back around the holidays. I Lost a few family members and some terrible turns of events occurre, and at 24 days after delivery I found this coin I had ordered before all the drama. I opened it and was not at all happy with it.

I sent a really polite message to the seller asking if I could return this, and apologizing for the long delay. I had the intent of paying shipping both ways (30 day return policy)

I got back a belligerent message about shopping around and NO I could not return. He was sick of folks changing their minds. He lashed out that I sell on eBay and don't accept returns (I do but it's not listed as such) I was shocked at how rude this guy was.
So I just filed a legitimate return through eBay and sent it back promptly. He sent a menacing massage saying I had 4 days to return or no refund, and this was on Friday? Of a holiday weekend no less.
    I addressed the package to
Jack Arse aka the Rude Guy at...

Then I sent him a final message saying how I had tried to message him first, and politely, about the return. I didn't understand his anger and refusal to accept a return when it's an option he chose for the listing. I then said I hoped he worked out his anger issues and offered my best wishes.
    Eventually I got my refund

My last return was from e-Bay, a slabbed (not PCGS) PR-62 Barber quarter. It looked fine in the pictures but had a nasty rim nick in hand. I politely informed the seller that I wanted a return and that my problem was not with him but with the grading company that should never have straight graded the coin. The return went through with no issues and I would buy from that seller again.

It was a $6500 seated half from a major dealer with a no questions asked return policy. It was in a N53 holder, gorgeous peripheral toning. Dealer told me it did not pass CAC but eye appeal in the image and the rare variety made me want to buy it anyway. When I got it in hand I knew why right away - heavily dipped to the point of detraction resulting in strongly subdued luster (no remaining cartwheel when rotating under the light) over untoned/shiny interiors on each side. Sent it back same day. Dealer stuck with their return policy but it did not go back on dealer website. 6 months later, same coin is in a P53 holder with a green bean. I would not buy it even with a green bean when the dipping sometime in the past was that severe....... I would buy from that dealer again, but the lack of correspondence when I informed of my decision to return it, well, time to give it a pause to let things settle some.

    Once in a blue moon.

Recently on a fairly expensive dime that was almost neon in color. Color just seemed unreal, and had no problems with return.

Mostly, my mistakes are my problem.

My last return was in November. I received the same type of medal that I ordered, but it wasn't the actual one in the picture.

On a related note, not too long ago I was the underbidder of a $1100 auction and I get a message from the seller a week or so after it ended. The seller said that the winner of the auction found a bump on the rim and wants to return it, or get a $500 refund. The seller wanted to know if I would take it for my bid price, if she decided not to give the 50% refund. Unfortunately/fortunately I no longer had the funds. Fast-forward to today, the item is now listed on eBay by the winning bidder, with a price much higher than $1100, and a comment to the effect that the rim bump "is not really distracting in [his] opinion." Watch out for these guys!

Been a long time since I returned a coin. I think the last one was around 2009-2011. The coin was a gold $10 Indian AU/slider off the BST. It turned out to be fake. I sent it back.
