NGC's verification now requires knowing the grade

In the past you could go on NGC's page and plug in consecutive certification numbers and up would pop all the coins on the invoice: https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/ Now you have to know all the grades with the invoice numbers. Must be one of the whales like HA complained?

Seems like a useless step. Harpoon that whale!
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
I prefer how PCGS has set up their system, very professional in my opinion.
.
I do not buy NGC coins, but I considered 2 coming to the BayState show [for potential crossover] and I thought that was strange that they required the grade in addition to the cert No.
Not sure what's going on with the "security" of their cert numbers ?
Just my opinion

Should be trying to make this easier for people to use, not harder.
I just saw that today for the first time.
On a similar note, is there any reason to hide the cert number when I post a picture of a slab here? Wasn't sure if there was any reason to be concerned.....
Could it be an anti-slab counterfeiting measure...?

I got really turned off by NGC when they quit letting PCGS coins in the registry and with this they seem to be headed further down the hill..... I can understand though as a business having a contest and watching your competitor beating you on your webpage has to be hard.
Successful trades.... MichaelDixon,
There may be good reasons but I can't name them.
I suppose counterfeiter could use the cert number on a counterfeit coin so it checks out as good?
Some sellers omit it so you can't check that specific coins auction history.
I'd like to know NGC's reasoning for having to input the grade.

Their paper money grading verification system has also gone crazy with that: https://www.pmgnotes.com/certlookup/
I"ve heard people say this before but I don't understand. Were you "turned off' the whole time PCGS doesn't allow theirs?
And I'm assuming the new grade verification is to help thwart fake slabs but I don't know.
I for one _JMHO _do not see how it helps "thwart" fake slabs "

I just don't like the abrupt change in policy... I've always thought higher of PCGS and they have always allowed only their coins.... While I wasn't very competitive in either of the registries I thought it allowed for broader competition base on the NGC registry when both were allowed.... I have coins in both holders and while it doesn't really bother me for my collection purposes eventually i will convert all mine to PCGS holders because i like the set up here better for keeping track of my collection.
Successful trades.... MichaelDixon,
Wasn't 'hiding' cert #'s 'big' awhile back, so the cert #'s couldn't be hijacked/stolen/borrowed and be wrongfully added to registry sets? I recall ebay being FULL of blacked-out cert #'s on coins from our hosts, as well as from ATS. Don't recall any other service's cert #'s blacked out.
But I do Like how NGC numbered their samples and allows you to track them in their inventory like a normal coin
Successful trades.... MichaelDixon,
They don't do a very good job with the earlier sample slabs. I have entered certs with say a Morgan or a piece $ and it showed as a dime. I have talked with the registry mods. And there wasn't much they could do. No big deal Just saying.

Could it be because when you access the cert. it also shows info such as NGC priceguide which NGC charges for? PCGS does not charge for their priceguide!
I'm glad they did it since the old way allowed people to "poke around" a slab number (up or down), and see what other coins were on that same invoice. It was useful in a sense, but at the same time it hurt a dealer/collector who for whatever reason didn't want to share a coin with the public yet.
I think it was more to keep the Chinese from using them on their fake slabs, but i think there are too many tinfoil hat owners here.
It wouldn't be hard to send PCGS an email with a picture of the coin showing you currently own it. I know people here do it on occasion when they purchase a new coin and the seller is lazy or slow in removing it from their registry.
I intentionally selected in the wrong grade on a known certification number and it stated that "No match was found"...I was kinda hoping for something a little more dramatic like; "step away from the computer and surrender to the numismatic police" with sirens blaring, etc...

Would love to hear their rationale...their link to their certificate verification is hidden as is...
In theory, you could enter random numbers and find valid coins that could be used for counterfeit slabs. Now you need to at least have some familiarity with the coin and know its grade. Of course, the Chinese will still resort to auction house databases, but I guess anything is better than nothing...
This is my guess.
interesting...
I spoke with their customer service this morning and they said it was to keep collectors "safe". Sometimes we are too safe, we have 45 plus cops in my town of 20K, maybe people need to learn their own self-defense.
ill stick with pcgs ( better system ) jmo
It's definitely a weird change in policy ATS.
My YouTube Channel
I found this out after the birthday/cert# thread. I used my birthday then started with ms70 and worked my way down. Once I hit ms64 or 63 it blocked me out and said I was over my look up limit. Very lame if you ask me. I've always liked NGC but a lot of the changes they have made recently seem to alienate more than embrace the collector in my opinion
I strongly feel that two or three viable TPGs is important to promote competition and to keep everything honest. Monopolies aren't good for markets or consumers. From a business point of view, the other big TPG seems to be doing fine with moderns and foreign coins, but becoming irrelevant with respect to classic US coinage. The door will potentially open for a new startup at some point. I don't see it soon, but perhaps within a few years.
OH Great, look what I started!
Successful trades.... MichaelDixon,
Great going @UnclePennyBags

Just kidding
I'm sure a sixth grade computer wiz could easily get around the 'lockout limit'

Or they could identify the nosy certification searcher by ISP address and block them. Makes no sense. I still don't understand the value of the security measure.
