Special shout out to Chris @ NEN

Thanks to Chris Clements, NEN sent me a complimentary set of the Stack's May 1999 auction catalogs. Hardbound, and in nice condition, this includes the "Mr. 1796" sale of coins by John Whitney Walter whose set is complete with every die marriage of 1796-dated US coins.

I was at the auction and bid desperately on my lot of interest. I did not win. I think I lost by two increments, which was several increments than I had hoped to pay. I saw his famous cousin just before the auction started. I subsequently met the consignor at a NYNC meeting. Nice man, and very knowledgeable about numismatics. I felt like a kid talking to a celebrity.

A tiny piece of Whitney trivia... I actually sat (literally) next to Donald Trump during the live auction.

The Donald did not raise his hand for a single coin. When I inquired why later, I was told that Whitney was a long-time head of his security detail, and thus a personal friend. Someone else can confirm or deny this...

I was told, by whom I do not recall and thus cannot assess accuracy, that Mr. Walter is Trump's cousin. Walter also had a large ancients collection. While not impossible, it seems unlikely that a security guy would be such an accomplished numismatist.

There is another guy who has been part of Trump's personal security detail, Keith Schiller, that may be the guy in question: read about Keith Schiller here. Or, it could be two different people...

EVP: that sounds plausible as well (relation). Or quite possibly, both. Trump does prefer to hire family, as we know.

p.s. sorry to have hijacked this thread. Chris and I go way back and he is one of the great guys in the coin business. Tom Caldwell and Chris @ Northeast are extremely knowledgable and fair.

    John,

Trump was indeed at the Whitney Sale, and his relationship to Whitney is/was how you stated! I don't think any of us in the room could have ever predicted Trump would one day be president.
