1913-S Type 1 Nickels were of course saved in quantity. Being the first year of issue, all coins can say that to a degree. San Francisco had real problems producing quality nickels in 1913. The problem became much more severe with the Type 2. It seems that as the coinage year went on, the mechanical problems became severe. There were major problems with the feeder mechanism, and most coins ended up with severe clash marks and unevenly struck coins. Add that to the face that most everybody who saved first year coins missed the type 2 because they already had a type 1, not realizing that a change had been made.
Factor in the low mintage of type 2 coins and we can all see why a nice Type 2 is hard to find.
This Type 1 is missing most of the maladies that plagued Buffs in 1913. It has a nice split tail, and is well stuck throughout. Although it is not obvious in the pics, there is mint luster hiding in the recesses in places.
I grade it AU-50 to 53

what do you suppose the area at the top of the obverse is? Some type of post-mint damage is my assumption.
It's post mint damage..........likely and unfortunately the coin was slid across something.
Great to see BuffaloIronTail posting again. He's forgotten more about this series than 99 percent of collectors will ever know.
