    AU Details - Improperly Cleaned

  • Options

Circulated and likely would not be gradable, but has a great strike with nice detail. Would be a cool pocket piece if it isn't already.

All 1921 Peace Dollars are high relief.

I agree with AU details -cleaned. Better for an album than a slab IMO.

I like the coin, but appears to have been polished. Otherwise it looks like an AU58.

I didn't think this coin was cleaned, what's the giveaway ?

I don't see any cleaning hairlines. So I understand why you wonder.

Often the TPG's will bodybag a coin like this for cleaning simply because it is unusually bright/shiny.

It's a questionable call that can sometimes be reversed. But it takes resubmissions...time and money. Thing is, is it worth the battle?

Let us know how it turns out.

    It just looks cleaned.
Examine coins with good luster-- you'll be able to tell the difference.
It's mostly about the "look", the lack of luster flow, the flatness of the luster.
To us old timers, coins like this just jump out at you, and are dismissed if seen in a case at a show without even a conscious thought.
It's cleaned and won't grade. I am not trying to be harsh here but to prevent future mistakes you should study up a bit more before spending money on any more coins.

This is an interesting case... I agree with Lance, I do not think it was cleaned - at least not abrasively. It may have been over dipped at some point and allowed to re-tarnish, but not cleaned in the usual sense. If you do send it in, please let us know what the results are....Cheers, RickO

Probably burnished with a cloth to bring out the details. Too bad because it is an above average strike for that issue.

My explanation of this coin being cleaned is due to the fact that the luster does not look natural. Compare it side by side to a couple graded peace dollars and you will understand why myself and others are saying that.

If you take a coin that has been circulated, then taken out of circulation for 30 years, allowed to build a patina, and then put it in your pocket, it will look like this by the end of the day. Try it...

Unfortunately we are in an era of market grading and the feedback you are getting is that this coin is not market acceptable in a straight graded holder. Sorry about that :(

It just has that lightly buffed look, as someone said, it sticks out like a sore thumb when you see one like this next to other unmolested coins. Having said that, it's still a nice piece (Peace?). I bet it was awesome when it left the mint. Put it in an album and hope it tones somewhat.

I think it will go AU-50 to AU-55.

Nice AU for an album IMHO

Nice pics which allow us all to inspect or in my case, appreciate the 21.

I too would keep it but not have it graded.

Too much gloss. AU cleaned from me, too.
