Finally got a $3 gold piece for my collection!

ElmerFusterpuckElmerFusterpuck Posts: 4,796 ✭✭✭✭✭

I've been looking off an on to add this coin as a type for my collection. I remember the prices being run a some years back, which made me stop looking for awhile. After they came back down a bit, I started looking again for a nice XF/AU non-1854 or '78 piece. I hadn't realized that so many of these were goobered up by cleaning, being in jewelry or just scrubbed out beyond ugly. Finally this came up in the last Stack's auction and I got it for a price I liked, even with the juice. This 1856 is graded AU-58 and it does have a CAC sticker, which doesn't hurt. Now I can sleep at night.

And WHAT, pray tell, is wrong with an 1854?

Actually nothing! :D Just wanted something besides a 'common' date, though none of these coins are exactly common. Apologies to any 1854 or 1878 pieces out there!

Never purchase one of these in the raw. Smart getting it authenticated as 90% solid gold/authentic and not fake.

For one thing, on an 1854, the reverse DOLLARS is in much smaller letters...

    Nice coin!

    Nice coin. Congrats!

I have one minted in 1854 from a little town in Georgia. I'm OK with it small letters and all. ;)

I remember ,when I was a kid ,sitting in on the Stack's 1971 ANA auction. They had almost 50 $3 pieces in the sale . I wanted one but never had the nerve to get my hand in the air. Any of them would have been a lot of money for me at that time .I have always regretted not buying one them.

$150.00 in real money was a lot back in 1854. I can't imagine why anyone would squirrel away 50 gold coins like that without wanting to spend them (back in the day).

there's some pretty frosty luster remaining on that one. nice!

i like the smaller letters on the 54...they match the $1 piece. however, i can see wanting an alternative date. congrats

    1856, the number
