1821 Bust quarter AU

logger7logger7 Posts: 9,125 ✭✭✭✭✭

This coin sold on HA years ago: https://coins.ha.com/itm/bust-quarters/1821-au50-ngc-the-current-coin-dealer-newsletter-/a/23084-13581.s?ic3=ViewItem-Auction-Archive-PreviousPricesHeritage-081514

Any idea how PCGS would see it? Would they net it down? Does anyone know the variety?

That's anybody's guess. It might be market acceptable to some but I'd bag it for cleaning.

Wayte Raymond, 2-3 years on the windowsill might do the trick.

Yuck, no. Colors are not going to make that look better. Needs dirt,

Was Deller's darkener ever good with that? I wonder how long it will be before someone offers quality toning or dirt adding services.

I figured I would let a few others comment before I spoke! I concur with all the opinions above. The coin almost looks like it has PVC haze and not quite enough meat for me for an AU!

    Dipped for sure, but cleaned?

    I don't know as I don't see any hairlines.

    I don't like it either

As to the variety...I could be wrong, but I believe it's a Browning-3.

As to the grade...looks more XF than AU to me.

Based solely on the pictures, the surfaces look pretty dull and lifeless (and obviously dipped), but that's also based off of a picture from 2003.

Certainly appears dipped.... cannot see any 'cleaning' signs beyond that.... Cheers, RickO

Doesn't look to be a very nice coin. It's been put in a newer holder since the Heritage photo and it's available on Sam Sloat Coins.

Doesn't have the look I like from that time period.

I sort of wonder how NGC would respond if the coin were sent in under their "appearance review". As a raw coin submission they may not want it in a straight AU50 holder but the loss is significant if they downgrade.

I think it's XF details, and will net VF money.

Do you like that look from another time period?
