What's the most you'll spend on a coin on Ebay ?
Do you have a personal limit that you set when buying a coin BIN or even at auction ?
What if that coin isnt being offered by a well known dealer... (assuming there's a return privilege)

As high as paypals guarantees go.

I do not buy from unknown sellers..
Coin Club Benefit auctions ..... View the Lots
It depends on who the seller is as scammers pop up from time to time, but would prefer to avoid long drawn out issues and drama.
$17500 for an 1894 Morgan from Ellesmere coin on Ebay.
beaned?
2004 or so. Pre bean era.
Ahhh we were so foolish then......
$0.0. Not my jam

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
$1K. I buy a limited number of things from Ebay: books, old mint reports, antique electrotypes, and circulating counterfeits. I have not bought real coins from Ebay.
RMR: 'Wer, wenn ich schriee, hörte mich denn aus der Engel Ordnungen?'
CJ: 'No one!' [Ain't no angels in the coin biz]
Wow. That would cut the amount of coins available to me by an insane margin.
I'm with Chris... However much the ebay/paypal guarantees will cover.
$300
eBay one of safest places to buy - my limit applies to mail order transactions
I only LOL because you got your money back otherwise that would be a sad tale.
Someday tell the story. I've not heard of so much effort going into splitting two coins in half for a grade. Was the plastic fake or just the label?
None of us were, Craig. I took a much closer look at my Ebay purchases after that wake up call. As I recall you had had the coin for a few months before your suspicions led to having it checked out.
It was a 32 obverse sandwiched to a unknown "d" reverse if memory serves.
Most I've spent was in the 3K range.
Largest item I've sold though was $18500.
Was the cert number any good?
Today ? 50 cents with free shipping.
With reputable dealers///why take the chance.
But I may change my mind when I learn how to use the internet.

Aluminum used to be rarer than gold. Nice investment and thinking outside of the carton.
Here are some threads on this. I remember the discussion and posted on one of the threads.
There was some speculation at the time this was an American counterfeit. Any truth to that?
$650 is the most I've spent on a coin, but I've spent more on photography equipment. Between eBay, PayPal, and the credit card company things are pretty tipped in the buyer's favor.
Between 2,000-3,500 with known dealers and Beyond $1,000 on coins with a previously unknown to me dealer Adam eBay ID coinslabz26. Great guy was willing to negotiate.

PayPal with credit card. Why not reap the benefits of frequent flyer miles or cash back rewards? Not to mention last years ebay eBucks offers. Lots of "free" coins and Round trip California to Philadelphia for free, 3-6 times a year on average.
Like in Punch Drunk Love, I exploited rewards/miles with cards and airlines, flipping silver with some BOLD investments last January-February. The gradual months long increased silver and gold prices worked so well I had maxed out the yearly rewards on 3 cards by June, and moved on to others cards. 90% brought ebucks when bullion didn't. I backed off in September and flipped into the registry like Nemo swimming towards a boat...

I purchased coins on ebay in the early days.... had some good buys too.... later on, as I saw the scams increasing, I stopped.... I have purchased a couple in the last few years.. mainly PCGS slabbed that I could check out.... no losses... but I am very cautious. Prefer the BST here... Cheers, RickO
The limit is my budget, not my confidence in eBay. There are a lot of good collectors and dealers that use eBay as an outlet. When I sell my coins I put them on eBay because it's the best option. You can get ripped off anywhere in life, and eBay is no exception.
There are certain coins, for which there are known fakes, that I will exercise extra caution with.

If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

If I find it and have the money I buy it. EBay is not a lot different from shows, stores and flea markets. You get some bottom dwellers in all venues. Some of the biggest are the worst offenders of all. EBay can be a cheap shoot, so if you feel lucky rolling the dice. Buying off this site canbe be worse than going thru ebay
NGC registry V-Nickel proof #6!!!!
working on proof shield nickels # 8 with a bullet!!!!
RIP "BEAR"
$4100.00 for a 1793 Half Cent about 10 years ago.
$3200 on a shield nickel from some random Ebayer. Only had two issues in 15 or so years. Once, a seller sent the coin in just an envelope and the coin fell out during the sorting process. Was a <$5 coin (1989 counterfeit lead quarter). Ate the loss. Another time was buying a $2,000 coin from a seller who was trying to scam me by never sending it. My sister is VERY good with computers, and let's just say that we compiled some information on him and he politely returned my money.
I make my living out of it
I once spent $4K (2005 ish) , with an unknown seller on eBay who had 0 feedback. Sold the coin last year in a private sale for $12K. It was a Cheerios Dollar in the blister pack. Took me nearly 2 years to get it into a PCGS holder.
I was the underbidder and the seller contacted me after the fact and gave me the Second Chance offer. Seems the original winner backed out. Win some, lose some. That's still the most I ever spent on a single coin from eBay. Might go higher, some day.
I would spend as much on eBay as I would on any other site, just as long as I have PayPal protection and a return policy.
Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍
