Where to find new pennies

dontippetdontippet Posts: 2,615 ✭✭✭✭

I usually hang around the PM forum or the sports forums. My robotics team is looking to make and distribute jewelry out of pennies. Where, preferably locally, can I find brand new pennies? They don't have to be BU, just new shiny coins, preferably 2017.

    Have you tried a bank?

Not yet. My credit union would be my first option. I'll try them early this week.

eBay. No run around or bank hassle. The premium is shrinking on the 2017 coins.

I have picked up about twenty new 2017 cents just from the 'take a cent, leave a cent' bins at check out counters.... Cheers, RickO

Cheapest on ebay is 16.25 for 500 pennies. Interesting how I can buy wheat pennies for about the same premium. These are to hand out to junior highers, and I doubt if they know what a wheat penny is although I like the wheat penny idea better because some people think they have "value".

Try a bank that has a high commercial foot traffic.

i went to my bank a few days ago and asked for $25.00 in pennies. The teller wouldn't sell them to me saying their pennies in the vault were for businesses.

i explained to the teller that I am a coin collector and wanted to search the pennies for specimens for my collection. I would return most of the pennies after searching them.

"oh,we have to count and roll them. That's extra work for us."

i spoke to the manager of the tellers. She told me, "Sorry. Our policy is to sell pennies only to businesses."

"Bad policy," i told the manager.

i will be advising people not to use this particular bank whenever I get a chance. We are not closing our account but we will be getting a new primary account at a different bank. The old bank will become nothing but a dump bank for pennies for me.

The tellers at this bank will soon be doing the dreaded extra work and will have even more pennies for the businesses they serve.

I have had this problem at Bank of America, and so closed my accounts and safety deposit box.

Most banks will not order change for people due to the fact that it "cost them money" to order from the armored cars. I was turned down and went all the way to the president of my bank and can now order any change that I want but they can not promise me it will be new. I was also told that I can't bring it back to them or they would stop ordering for me. Its a total joke. Coins are made for commerce and if you want coin instead of bills they should get you want you want no strings attached. If not whats the reason for striking coins?

Bottom line is it cost the bank and takes away from the profits...profits they are making on OUR deposits!!!

Barstow California usually ends up with a lot of shinny new pennies. Especially at the AM/PM mini-market.

My local BofA branches always ordered boxes of coins for me, and would sell me what they had onhand at the time if I asked. No issues with them (about 4 branches locally that I would rotate between).
    Wells Fargo did as well.

My credit union wouldn't. They wanted to deal with coins as little as possible.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
