And here are the other keepers in the box, Bechtler and Dahlonega

In an earlier post of my 1849 Moffat $5 I mentioned a recent deal I made with an old timer collector and some of the folks asked what else was in the box.
Well here are the two other keepers from the deal. There were eight coins in all and I sold off the other five.
As a southern gold guy having a Bechtler or two is pretty much required. Very happy to have this nice original proof like example added to my collection:
And this solid Dahlonega Half Eagle is a nice upgrade to my Dahlonega Type Set. You can see the entire set by clicking the link below in my sigline.

Dayum boy!
Very nice pair there.
I'm not a gold guy but that Bechtler is sweet!
what a great box you got! congrats
Those coins are Sweet!
Wow! Very nice.
What's the story about the Bechtler reverse N? Was it a blunder or was there some message behind it? It looks like an effort was made to correct it.
Lance.
My understanding is that it was just a blunder, and the coin is pretty common for a Bechtler so they did not go out of their way to correct it.

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Lance, it was the quality of the whiskey that came out of the still that day!
Looks like artificial toning on the first one.... just kidding! Love them both!!!
No kidding! I'll bet it was some mean hooch. It's not like an N punch was used upside down. LOL.
Lance.
Nah, they just dipped them all in the whiskey.
It is interesting to note that the Bechtlers were the first ones to mint a gold dollar coin. These were minted in the 1830s, well before the US Mint in 1849.

i moved from california to old fort, nc in 1979. i remember being struck by the many cultural differences...in particular there were lots of signs with reversed n's on them. for example "night crawlers $1.50" with n reversed. painted signs, those signs with the plastic letters, i noticed it a lot. i think it was a common mistake some people made in that region as i had not seen it elsewhere. old fort is a short drive to the bechtler mint.
that bechtler is outstanding!!
Wow!
Looks like the "A"s are actually upside down Vs, too. Great coin!

Thanks Tom, coming from you is quite a compliment. But when it comes to cool coin I have nothing on you.
Hey Claychaser, what a great year to collect. Those obverse mint marks in 1839 give me a woody.
