1923 D Buffalo Nickel ?? Red Book says none made

Going through some junk coins and came across this. Looks like a 23 and a "D" on reverse but none made. Maybe altered?

looks like an s that got damaged
Looks like a calligraphy D that's drunk. Strange as all hell my friend.
Top part of 'S' covered by dirt. Soak piece in acetone to dislodge the dirt.

or damaged. lots of coins out there with partial mm.
im going with pmd or someone was bored.
.
Thanks for the feedback. Looks like it's not a "discovery" piece
... Another odd find in the junk pile. . Someone copper plated this nickel. See plating coming off on the edge

That is only the bottom portion of the S mintmark. Either the top portion has been crushed or is covered up with gunk. From the image it looks to be crushed.
@Coinlearner...Rather than copper plating, that looks like a dug nickle... have often seen them turn red like that in some soil types... ICBW... Cheers, RickO
I have seen these before. some used to refer to this as a d over s variety. Hard to tell, especially so for
lower grade specimens.
