Buena Park Coin Show - today

Didn't see much hype leading up to today here on the boards. But today and tomorrow is the Buena Park Coin Show.

I stopped in about 11:30 or so. This show is usually one of my favorites. A mid-sized show, with many of the best "collector grade" dealers in SoCal. Maybe the only downside is that it is usually held very close in time to the Long Beach show, and I tend to be a little burned out!

But, today just annoyed me. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood....but the aisles are just too small, and they insist on putting 3 or 4 chairs at every table. You spend more time dodging chairs, swinging backpacks, wheeled cases, and people just standing in the way, than you do looking at coins!!

On the plus side, they've finally finished the upgrades to the "Retail Clerks Hall", and the parking is infinitely better than it used to be. If only they'd made the hall BIGGER.

I spent about an hour poking around. Almost bought a 1878 8TF Morgan in MS-63. Had nice luster, but the asking price was in excess of what I could justify. I was about to leave in frustration, when I spotted what I thought was a very attractive AU-50 1839 (lettered edge) Bustie. Exceedingly clean surfaces, light brownish toning, and well struck, (prior to getting some wear). None of that weakness in the reverse motto banner you often see with coins of this era.

Funny how buying a nice coin suddenly made the annoying show a good experience. :)
(I still blame me, more than the show. Seemed to be a good crowd, with plenty of activity).

Anyway, this coin made me wonder, Which would you prefer:
A) A weakly struck MS coin (say MS 62 or 63) with full luster,
or
B ) A well struck AU coin, with wear appropriate for the grade?

I'd probably go with B. One, it will be cheaper, and I've become a bit of a Strike snob. I want to see the design!! ;)

Thanks for your report. I was glad to see the construction finished too, but you're right, they could have made the hall a bit bigger instead of just messing with the lobby. Definitely one of the more crowded shows. I think this is partially because there is a waiting list for dealers to get in and they are trying to get as many in each show as possible.

And I'll go with B for my answer.

Thanks for the report... and follows the 'up trend' in show reports (except for the ANA show reported earlier)... Cheers, RickO

I tried this week to find coin shows in California around the LA area and didn't find anything.
For the So Cal locals, how do you know when and where to go?

What he said! Go there, plug in your zip code, and a 50 mile radius, and you should get a list of what's coming up!

Can't believe I missed it. Oh well, I did the next best thing on Saturday. Cut down that Poplar tree that has been bothering me. That's my other hobby. Cutting down trees. It's not like coin collecting. You don't have to go find 'em. They come to you. Also, they're free and there's no end to them. Only problem is the heat. It's only March and it's 90°. That's Southern California. You gotta' love it!

Just for some added info the Verdugo Hills show in two weeks they do a gold raffle. Top prize is a $10 Indian. For those close by who missed the Glendale Coin Club Meeting Friday, Verdugos meeting is Tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads-up bigjpst. I'll do my best to get to the Verdugo Hills show next weekend. Never been to that show before. Still can't believe I forgot about Buena Park this weekend. I've got a wedding scheduled for next Saturday. A coin show. Perfect excuse. Who wants to see some 50 year-old loser slob get married for the fifth time? Not me. I've already bought him and the four x's four toasters.

Good choice. But Gardena is next week and Verdugo is the following. Verdugo is a one day show on Sunday.

Thanks. Gardena it is. ANYTHING to avoid the wedding. It's even BYOB. Class act. If I can't get bombed on their dime, what's the point?

Just heard from a dealer that usually does those shows that Gardena isn't happening. Somebody's wires are crossed. I would confirm before you head there.

I tried Coinzip.... nice resource... however, it just confirmed that there are zero coin shows in my area... :( Cheers, RickO
