PCGS Chopmarked Trade dollar.

Does anyone else see what looks like damage on the obverse of this Trade dollar? I do realize that most do consider the chopmarks themselves as damage, I do as well. I am referring to the area to the left of Lady Liberty. It looks to me like scratches or graffiti that was covered up by possible chopmarks . It is in a newer Pcgs AU-58 holder

Yes, from that image it looks like there is clear damage in addition to the chop mark.

It may have been a rival merchant who did not care to see the other "chop mark", so they scribbled it out?

Get a second opinion with PCGS. Might be mintstate even though your photo looks bleached out.
Looking at the reverse, it seems that the coin was hit with a metal punch (not chopped), and there isn't a depression where the obverse marks at 9-10:30 are. This looks like obverse and reverse damage.

The punch/drill mark on the reverse is a contemporary mark treated as a chopmark by serious collectors
Yes looks like probably damage. The mark closest to the olive branch looks like an M or W stamp over some engraving.

Looks like someone tried to scratch it out.

It does appear that someone tried to scratch out a counterstamp or chop mark on the obverse. It looks like damage to me and I am surprised that PCGS graded it. The punch mark on the reverse is generally not a problem on a chop marked coin, and PCGS will usually grade it --unless it is the only mark on the coin.

Yes... from the picture, that looks as if a chop or counterstamp was defaced.... Cheers, RickO
I just seen this dollar on collectors.com/ebay (theonlywinner) perhaps they have not taken it down yet after the sale...or is it still active?

The large central chopmark(s) bent the coin and smashed the reverse against the rough surface of the anvil. This seems normal.
The drill bit dig on the reverse is, as TDN says, another legitimate form of testing.
However, the marks in the upper left obverse field do not seem to have a corresponding anvil mark on the reverse. Because of this I have strong doubts that it is a chop mark, but I'll be danged if I could say what it is without seeing the piece. An engraving that was later defaced? I don't know.
