Question on value.

In my area there is a local antique auction that has a bunch of Morgan, Peace, proof sets, and a 1909 $5 gold Indian head coin. Most of the Morgan/Peace dollars would only go for melt but my question is about the 1909 Indian.

It is hard to tell from the auction photos but I think it is in the VF range and looks to be problem free as far I can tell. What would you value something like that at?

Thanks in advance.

A hair above melt (not much numismatic value in that grade). If it is raw, be sure that it is in the correct fineness range (it might be a counterfeit). Don't bid unless you are sure of your ability to authenticate it.

If the Morgan and Peace dollars are only selling for melt then it sounds as though they are selling too cheaply.

Various resources such as the Red Book, the Greysheet, etc could help. I also highly recommend the Blue book for this case.

Regarding the gold Indian... be careful of counterfeits.... If you can get the Morgans at melt, go for it.. as TomB said, that is cheap for Morgans. Cheers, RickO
