Your Opinion - What Would PCGS Do Upon Reconsideration?

This coin puzzles me (ok, yes, maybe it shouldn't, but I'm asking anyway). It's in a OGH AU50 holder (with green CAC) and I like it in the current holder, but I'm curious. The reverse is prooflike and yes that is a fine scratch in the field in front of Liberty's elbow on the obverse. The obverse has muted luster, especially when one compares it to the reverse.
Do you think the scratch is the limiting factor? Is your guess based upon the pics that it would not upgrade or are today's standards different when you consider this coin?
Thanks for any and all opinions!

Hard to know about luster from photos but at first blush, this coin looks very nice for AU50. I would assume the scratch and obverse luster limit it to the assigned grade. Difference in price between 50 and 53 not likely to justify a submission but curiosity is another thing entirely...

The coin may have been net graded due to the scratch. Looks like it has 55 details. I think there is a good chance reconsideration would yield a 53 or 55, but I don't think the increase in value would be enough to warrant the shipping/grading fees IMO.
Side note I like the reverse toning
I would leave it as it is...sure is a nice one!

Looks like a 55 to me and I don't think that tiny scratch had any effect on the grade.
A bump to 53 is probably not worth it. 55 or 58, probably.
If it's possible to resubmit to CAC, hoping for a gold sticker, I would try that. (I don't know if CAC accepts "reconsiderations".)
Otherwise I'd leave it alone in its OGH with the green CAC.
Lance.
the coin is perhaps already net graded. Nice coin and a very fair but conservative grade.
I tend to think the coin wont get gold but could get a slight bump in a new holder.
I of course would leave it be in the OGH.
I like it as a 50. It might get a slight bump but not worth the effort and cost or losing the OGH. JMHO.

No the scratch limits it to AU 50 and even being discounted below that. It's
Not something I would pay full CDN bid for probably no offer period if brought to my table bc feel tough sell.
Just because a coin is OGH does not mean it will upgrade. Don't c the point of stickering it either. Looks like waste of money.
Probably about a $325 coin but could go as low as $200 on the Bay. I would call it an AU 50 - C coin. Not A or B IMO.
I would recommend getting rid of it if u can get anywhere near $400 and buying MS 64 - 65 CC PCGS Morgan Dollars or PCGS Mod $5 MS69 Commem Gold.
if I wanted to sell it,I would resubmit......if I wanted to keep it,I like it as is
I don't know what PCGS would do, but I expect the market would react to the coin being in a new holder by making it less liquid and/or less valuable.

Don't overlook the power of the ogh. In this case on a somewhat better date 1849, early no motto half. The coin looks every bit the part of AU55. The scratch is superficial. Had you not mentioned it, I would not have even recognized it as anything but a faint graze. Very nice eye appeal for an 1849. Worth AU55 money imo. And I'd pay as such ($400) even in the AU50 ogh holder. There's no reason to change holders at this point unless you intend to sell it soon. It's not far from an AU58 grade on details. Seems to me to be closer to 60 than a 50. It would have qualified as AU50 in the 1970's.
If the day comes to sell it, then consider what holder/grade optimizes your return. Worth in the $500-$650 range imo just as it sits. It would be a give away at under $400 for an 1849 with color and details like this. I'd call it a B+ coin. Most XF/AU seated halves of the 1840's are just horrible, often cleaned and holdered. CAC already stated it was A/B by stickering it. I think it's a very subtle coin that is much nicer than it appears at first....just too much sharpness and luster in the drapery and feather details. No doubt the Ebay bottom fishers would be hoping to buy such a coin for $200...lol.
I'd do a fixed price listing over retail when you are ready to sell but entertain offers.
Maybe not relevant here, but many of the earlier generation holders could now not only upgrade but possibly be eligible for plus and other positives not available when they were first graded.
Here's a CAC AU55 that brought $705 last year. To me it has similar rub, less eye appeal, no more luster than your coin, and plenty more obv tics and cuts.

Finding one stickered in XF/AU is not that easy. Only 7 of them at Heritage archives....none lower than $488.

I would leave it be. Nice coin.
OGH & Green CAC = desirable.
Anyone interested will easily see that it's PQ for grade and figure their buy price accordingly.
That is a very nice coin..... I think it exceeds the label grade... though I would keep it as is. Cheers, RickO
Thanks for all of your thoughts. Just so you know, I have no intent of sending it in since I like it to remain in the OGH, just merely interested in opinions. I especially like the flash of the prooflike reverse and the subtle colors on the obverse. The two sides have very different looks!

roadrunner - thanks for the context. That AU55 is one ugly coin in comparison!

I'd leave it as is since in a OGH it would command higher AU value without needing a higher level AU grade on the label.
