A story of my Cherry pick at the Tinley Park Show... UPDATE!

Hey guys, Yeah, like I was telling you guys about what I hunted down at the Show. The difficult 1998 Proof Set Close A.M. Cent Variety. Well I snatched it! Good Grief. Hip Hip hooray, right? Finally. Just like when I hunted down the other brother. The 1999 Proof Set Close A.M. Cent. but this time a wrench got tossed into it. Someone rained on my parade. You see, when I looked for the Variety and found it, I quickly just ran over to the Dealer to hurry and pay for my prize. Through my careless rushing from my excitement, I didn't notice until I got home what in the world I bought? Sure, the Variety was still there (Close A.M. Proof Cent) but to my surprise, the Cent had a "booger" smack dab in front of Abe's nose! AHHHHH! Can you guys help me and figure a harmless way to remove my Booger? In a way, I'm still happy on my find but the Booger popped my balloon. Here are some photos of my Booger Close A.M. Cent.

Looks more like something popped Abe's snot bubble.

If it is in fact a booger, it's organic, and acetone should take it off.

Not familiar in this area. How many of these exist and what would be the estimated value?

Also, it was in the 70s yesterday and today it was in the 30s. Don't blame Abe for catching a cold.

Well done on the find....and I suggest an acetone soak and alcohol rinse.... Cheers, RickO

Thanks RickO! Can I try rubbing the area with a Q-tip?

Check PCGS's Price Guide. It has the Variety in just a 63 at $125 in a DCAM. Almost all modern Proof Sets have DCAM's, almost. When you check the guide, you can also see it is the better Variety of the two Close AM Dates. With my mishap, I'll never even get a 63 Grade. :'(

Joey, That will scratch the proof surfaces.

Oh? Ok Thank You, buddy. You think the acetone and alcohol will take away my problem, like RickO says?

I don't think acetone will help that but it won't hurt to try.

Congrats- that's a great variety! I've picked 4 of them now. The main Coinfacts photo (PR69 DCAM) is one of my cherrypicks. I sold the coin on eBay for around $350 a couple years ago. I sold another in ANACS 65 DCAM (it had some hairlines) for around $125. The other 2 were ANACS 69 DCAM and sold in the $300 range.

WoW! Good for you, dude! Nice. The 1998 is a bugger to find and you found four? Cool. It's a shame with mine, huh? Oh well, beggers can't be choosy, right? ;)

Acetone? be careful with a proof though...

  • georgiacop50georgiacop50 Posts: 2,909 ✭✭✭✭

That likely would not reduce the grade by as much as you are imagining. As long as it is free of hairlines(no Q-tip!!) it will go at least 66 IMHO.

Depending on what the spot is it could even come off with very hot running water. You'll need a pair of plastic coin tongs for water but don't use plastic tongs with acetone.

Looks like a carbon spot maybe?

If it's free from hairlines, I agree with @georgiacop50 there's no way it goes all the way down to 63 with just that issue. I think 66 is reasonable, a 67 not out of the question.

That's no booger Tanto. I seriously do not think anything can remove that without imparting evidence of tampering. Copper is unforgiving.

Try acetone first then even dip......what can you lose. A 1998 proof set couldn't have cost much. You will never like it with that problem sticking out.

Cherry Pick, or Booger Pick? :)

Sure, the Proof Set in general did not cost much at all ($10). But the whole point is the value of the Cherrypick! The variety value, possibly of hitting a whopping $1000 if it would reach the ultimate Grade. That was possible before the mishap occurrence.

If the coin is otherwise completely problem free, you might consider NGC or PCGS Conservation Service.

  • joeykoinsjoeykoins Posts: 17,634 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hmmm? That's an option, thanks! :)

My thought is that the booger is worse than expected when one decides to remove it.

I'm thinking the dealer was happy to sell the set.

Sorry for the rain on your parade. I truly hope you fare better.

Thanks. Yeah, your probably right about the Dealer wanting to get rid of. but in saying that, I doubt very much that he was aware of the Variety? It's a funny situation. To think, who pulled the wool over who's eyes? Maybe, he Cherry picked ME? LOL

Since I found another 1999 Proof Set Close AM Cent, I decided to hold off, with trying to remove the problem with the Booger, until I find another 1998 Proof Set Close AM Cent. Rather than risk more damage to the coin. Than if I find another '98, I'll sell the Booger, for the price I paid for both Proof Sets. Thus, receiving my money back. Resulting in 100% Profit for the varieties.
One More Thing... Note I started another thread concerning my new find(1999 Proof Set Close AM Cent) Check it out. There are pics with the brothers reunited!LOL Thanks

The 1998 close AM is still considered very scarce. You will never lose money on selling it, even with the distracting spot, since you only paid $10.
If you are looking for a quick flip, Id throw it up on ebay for $125, noting the variety and problem.

I finally decided what to do. I Recently also acquired the counterpart, the 1999 Close AM Cent. So, I placed both single Coins on the Bay! Going to sell the "Booger" as is, along with the 1999 Close.AM together for one price. $225 Thanks again, guys. joey

Hard to tell is it wax or carbon? If wax it will work if not still a cool coin. Just sell it and buy some thing you will like with the $$$.

Selling on ebay?? Well... I think you may have done better by a soak, but - maybe not... Best of luck Joey... Cheers, RickO

Update: Just to let anyone know that is curious. Well my brothers did sell! Like I mentioned in my earlier posts, I placed both of the AM's together for one price. I was so worried as to what I should do about these? Thanks to you guys, the ones that suggested to just pop it up on the Bay and watch what happens, regardless of the "Booger" on the '98. So I took your advice and I won! Now, the Booger is someone else's problem. The buyer must have figured like some others here had suggested, as to soak it and try to remove the booger? Thanks again everyone for all your help. You guys ROCK! ;)
One More Thing... Now on to my NEW Mission, seeking for more '98 and/or '99 Close AM's! as well as, other profitable Cherries <3

Now that you have experienced the thrill of the sale.........get ready for more.
After selling many thousands of coins for a profit, I still never take a deal for granted.
I still get a charge out of making money on coins.
Even after 38 years of selling them.
