Will Trump bring back "big bills"? $500, $1000?

Not trying to be "political" here, just asking if anyone heard of any plans he may have to change coins or currency.

I think there's a strong possibility he may kill the cent and possibly the nickel. We have a CEO in office now and the numbers don't look good for their survival.

Personally I'd love to see them come back. But, the reasoning behind getting rid of them in the first place will always be. They make it too easy to launder money and transport large sums of cash back to drug cartels as well as a host of other financial crimes.

Yeah. Its not gonna happen. The technology that now exists to easily replicate bills will prohibit large notes from ever coming back. The push to digital currency is much more likely

runaway inflation would do that no matter who is in office, but as stated the trend is away from "Money" in any form.

Trump has already placed several Goldman Sachs bankers in the cabinet. He's as much for a no cash world as everyone else in govt is. Just hope that you'll be able to hang on to your $1's and $5's in the years ahead. Big Bills are an important part of counterfeiting, money laundering and avoiding taxes. Their days are numbered.

......hmmmmmm. Maybe the BEP could reissue them strictly as a non circulating issue, much the same as our current JFK halves. $500 today isn't much money, really....a kitty with the sniffles at the vet, I doubt if you'd get change!

I'm hoping he'll do what Roosevelt did and make our coins beautiful again. Hey, a guy can dream, right?

Look at the problems with the large denomination Euro's.

The 500 euro was nicknamed the Bin Laden due to it's criminal use. $1 million in 500 euro notes fits in a small bag and weighs less than 5 pounds.

I'd like to see him get rid of the cent, and turn the nickel into an "aluminum."

Agree. Also, he should get rid of the dollar bill since the dollar coin makes much more economical sense.

And....from a purely selfish "collector" POV....people will start thinking about coins for at least a little while, and maybe spark something in the hobby.

No on the big bills for the reasons already mentioned.

And you don't need to "get rid" of one cent and 5 cent coins, leave them legal tender, there are plenty of them, there is absolutely no need to withdraw them from circulation, demonetize them, or anything else...
    Simply stop making new ones.

No. The trend worldwide is to reducing issues of paper currency and coinage.

There are more $100 bills held outside the US than domestically. I could see Trump recalling them as part of an effort to juice the economy.

Large money center banks have too much control as it is... Why do they need more control over people, their money and access to it and commerce in general? A cashless US is simply unconstitutional

The bankers want to get rid of cash so they can skim a percentage off each transaction. New big bills? No.

I think we're a long way from doing away with cash. Some of the cranky old men here, (me included!), still live day-to-day on a cash basis.

But...ever get in line behind some kid at the mini-mart buying their morning coffee with an debit card? They consider it normal. Somewhere down the line, when us cranky old men are gone, they will probably go cashless, only because at some point nobody will WANT cash....

I agree with the consensus. Governments and banks want more control over all means of exchange, not less. I think we are lucky we still have $50 and $100 bills.

I doubt he will change much in the money supply except inflate it inevitably; plus we have a Tubman $20 coming down the pike soon and other new pictures on bills.

I doubt there will be any changes in coins or paper money.

  • ambro51ambro51 Posts: 13,963 ✭✭✭✭✭

......probably the half cent won't reappear either.

  • logger7logger7 Posts: 9,134 ✭✭✭✭✭

No, I doubt very much the physical or quality money movement will reverse.

ya think? The only place that Canadian cents circulate is in the US. There's been much discussion about the short life of the 'zincolns' here, Just get rid of them and make 1c coppers for mint and proof sets (like the Kennedy 50c).
Come to think about it, maybe your idea could come back with the half cents included in the mint and proof sets. They have so much "chatzkie"( or whatever that Yiddish word is) already coming out of the mint.

It's not his decision. The Treasury makes that call.
And what would be the point? I, or anyone can travel anywhere in the world with $50 cash and 2 credit cards.

Zero chance ,, even some tellers at the chase I go to ..have seen just 1 $500 in last 15 years .

    A $20 is not a big bill?

I rarely have cash, I just wish the magnetic strip on my debit card would last more than 6 months to a year, since the expiration date is about 4 years out when you get a new one.
