Slabbing reverse side out.

relicsncoinsrelicsncoins Posts: 8,130 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have a few toned Morgans to send in. One has a nice crescent on the reverse. Will PCGS slab a coin reverse side out, and how does one go about requesting it. What are your thoughts on this piece, would you have it slabbed in this manner or not?

Sometimes they will do it on their own, but generally you can write somewhere on the form to holder line items x,y,z, etc. reverse up and they will honor your request.

Use BIG letters. Draw arrows pointing at the note. Do not be shy about making your request obvious.
It's no guarantee of success, but it tends to be effective.
    When in doubt, don't.

i have had more than one coin rev side out...without me even requesting it. it's like they read my mind. this coin you have is really nice...i don't see why you would need the rev side out, in this case. i think the obv looks good too...then you flip it over for a colorful surprise.

is it just me, or do they purposely rotate mexican coins when slabbing them? i have a couple mexican coins, different denoms and composition, that i got slabbed (different submissions) and they came back rotated in the holder about -15 degrees. i have seen them on ebay that way too...weird!

Maybe Mexican coins are a hair undersized.

If you are displaying the coin, i.e. in a case and you have it purty side up, there is no info as to year, mm ,grade, etc. unless you take the time to turn the coin over.

    Very Simple -

    On the submission
    flip itself, just write,
    or put a good sticker
    on, that just says:

    '' REVERSE UP"

That's all you need to do.

    (it's not called reverse 'out',
    it's called reverse 'up', as
as far as the holder goes)

    yours is an excellent point.
  • That is a beautiful coin. They should absolutley not slab a coin reverse side out unless specifically requested. If you want it reverse out though go for it. image

Easy, just submit a shield cent and they'll slab it reverse up no matter what whether you like it or not!!!! image

I recently had a 1901 Morgan DDR slabbed Reverse Up. I also specified it on the submission form just to be safe and to leave a written record in case it came back "obverse up" and needed reholdering...

I now see this thread shortly after mailing out my package to our hosts.
I just cracked and sent this coin in raw:

I made no notes as to wanting it reverse up, but put it in the flip reverse up.

Do you guys think they'll slab it reverse up going on this info?
(The obv is white) pretty, but white...

  • bolivarshagnastybolivarshagnasty Posts: 7,353 ✭✭✭✭✭

asheland, You had better call customer service and request it. Not a given that they would assume color up.

  • FredWeinbergFredWeinberg Posts: 5,972 ✭✭✭✭✭

No, in all probability they will
place the Obv. side up in the holder.

For anyone who wants the REVERSE of
their coin showing on the front of the
holder, you just need to put:

                          REV. UP

on the actual 2.5 x 2.5 submission flip itself.

This thread reactivation is timely. Curious how many others noticed that the 1861-P Paquet Reverse $20 featured on David Hall's currently running video clip is displayed Reverse Up in its new PCGS holder. (It was also displayed Reverse Up in it former NGC holder as well.) To see the coin as it was previously slabbed by NGC head to this link:

Do you guys think a call to the reps would matter?

It's not the end of the world if the white side is up, (the obverse is indeed nice) I would just prefer the reverse up for obvious reasons..

YES! Call them, don't e-mail them, it seems that they are not monitoring the e-mails.

    Good to know this.
I have a '78CC Morgan with beautiful peripheral reverse toning and blazing luster, but the obverse is baggy with blah toning. I have it reverse side up in my 7070 album. If I ever submit it, I will request Reverse side up.

Ashland, I have found it is better to keep STAR coins in the NGC holder and try for the CAC sticker. Even without CAC, the STAR coin is usually worth more, leaving it in NGC.

    Nice coin!

I'd be pretty freaking angry if they did this without my request. After all this time you'd think they'd have a check box for that on the submission form.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

I believe you are correct. Unfortunately I already cracked it out. I sent it with a few toned coins to our host.
I wanted the crystal clear holders as they are quite nice for viewing these beauties. :)

Personally I am not a fan of the reverse side showing. I have seen some nice coins that I would pass on if they were holdered in that manner.

I just like the coins to be displayed the same.

You can have it any way you want it.... not the grade :D but the manner of display.... Just request 'Reverse UP' on the form.... You MAY be able to get it done with a phone call... however, that is not always possible. Cheers, RickO

There is something to be said for the pure white surround as opposed to translucent plastic - especially for a coin of color.

(Now that would be a nice option to also be able to request from PCGS, along with their already willingness to mount the coin "Reverse Up" as ricko noted.)
