That title threw me. As a Registry Set collector of $3 gold coins I was stunned to learn I had missed the 1981-S $3.

I must confess.
I love varieties and have been looking for them since the mid-to late 1980s, before they were "hot."
When I was 10 years old in 1972, my grandmother who lived on the east coast sent me a BU 1972 Ike. I noticed right away that there was something unusual about the reverse.....couldn't put my finger on it but knew it was something.......so put the coin away for years.....and yes it was a Type 2.....but as far as these 81-S...????? I will never "get it."
The 1981-S T2 is one that I can't wrap my head around no matter how many people have shown me the PUPs, diagnostics, etc.
I can spot a monor variety in a case without a loupe but as far as the 81-S Ty2's go.....I'll let someone else have all the fun with these.0 -
