Anyone else here searching Lincoln rolls? A couple observations included.

I try to search 10-15 Lincoln rolls from the bank weekly. It's a relaxing activity for me and is cheap entertainment. I don't keep official records of my findings but have come to the following conclusions:
- The four 2009 Lincoln anniversary cents are by far the toughest to find in circulation of all Zincolns I find. Draw your own conclusions......
- The Mint has flooded the country with Shield cents since their introduction. I believe over 25% of all rolls I've searched in the last 5 years are Shield cents.
- Our Zincolns are quickly deteriorating into corroded junk! Some of cents in rolls are really disgusting!!

It is relaxing and the new cents are corroding quickly. Here are somne of my finds that I have posted before
Successful transactions with : MICHAELDIXON, Manorcourtman, Bochiman, bolivarshagnasty, AUandAG, onlyroosies, chumley, Weiss, jdimmick, BAJJERFAN, gene1978, TJM965, Smittys, GRANDAM, JTHawaii, mainejoe, softparade, derryb, Ricko
Bad transactions with : nobody to date
2009 cents might be hoarded cause mintage were lower than usual.
Same thing can be observed with the 2005 Jeff-Buffalo nickels -- won't find too many (or any) in typical change or in getting rolls from the bank.
I agree the typical zincoln is bound to corrode, and finding a nice-shape, brown and gently circulated one is a real challenge!
The 2009 S mint cents and the satin finish 2009 P&D are the old copper recipe. Unlikely to find them in a roll, but possible.
I knew the S mint proofs were, but wasn't aware/didn't remember it was the same deal for the SMS-like satin P's and D's.
Agree, the 2009 cents are tough to find and normally when I do they have problems
HAPPY COLLECTING
Yes, I too search through at least 10 rolls of Cents a week. It is relaxing and exciting when you see that date of interest. Being the variety/error coin seeker, it is a lotta fun. I don't find too many Key coins but Wheaties, yes! When I see those wheats, my heart races before I flip over to the obverse, hoping it's a 1909,14d, 22d... And the 1992p or d, forget it. Before I flip over to the reverse, I say to myself, " Com'on baby, be a " Close A.M."
"Jesus died for you and for me, Thank you,Jesus"!!!
--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.Because of their metallic composition, the satin finish P&D's should be regarded as separate coins from their circulation counterparts, just like the 1864 copper-nickel and bronze cents. However, because their appearance is so close to that of the zincolns, the bronze satin finish 2009 cents tend to be ignored and they go cheap on eBay, around $10 for the set of eight. Kind of a bargain, considering that the mintage of each one is less than that of the 1931-S!

I agree the 2009 coins are tough to find.
My batting average for Shields is about .375 .
1971, 1969, 1978 are also difficult to find as are all the 68-74-S coins.
Pre 1982 coins are at about 12-15%, disappearing rapidly from cieculation.
And yes, I agree with you that it's relaxing and fun and cheap entertainment. I do it as well.
Some of my better finds over the last 6 months include
1972 DDO#3 XF/AU
1960 small date XF
1954-D/D/D RPM#1 XF
1928-S F
1983 DDO Die 5 nice unc.
1972-D/D unlisted...may send in for kudos
1984-D big "atheist" cud...only large cud I have ever found in change
1969-D NO FG initials (actually found on the ground in a parking lot!)
1920-S VG
Several teens and twenties (all came from the same roll)
I'm never going to get rich, but it's fun and I enjoy doing it, especially on a cold winter day with the fireplace going.
Joeykoins.....you must be way more of an optimist than I am.
When I spot a wheat, all I can think is that I hope it isn't the ubiquitous 1956-D.
I'll be picking up another 2 boxes tomorrow to search through. I love searching for hidden treasures even if they don't amount to much. Once I found a nice example of the 72 machine doubled variety, still hold onto it though. I'll post here if I find anything good in my hunt. Kris

Wouldn't it be interesting if the post '82 zincolns became "rare" in UNC condition because of deterioration? How about the lower grades - even more scarce without deterioration?
Boy, are they ever. I'd guess well over 90% of pre-2000 zincolns are corroded. BU rolls of them, while common, have mostly suffered a similar fate.
I've been looking since 1984 and so far have found a grand total of "1" choice Gem 1984 cent with nice surfaces. And even it has a tiny carbon spot.
It's a shame collectors have ignored these coins like all the other moderns.
Boy, your achievements are astronomical compared to mine. Very well done! To this day, I've never found a Shield Cent. The most impressive coin I found has to be a 2002 Proof Cent, way back in the early 2000's. Congrats. on your trophies.
"Jesus died for you and for me, Thank you,Jesus"!!!
--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.Wait a minute, I see a coin you have listed, where you found on the ground?( the 1969d No FG) If you're talking ON THE GROUND, I found a great coin! The 1999p " Wide A.M." Variety! I sent it in and it came back a "64RB" My best find today!
"Jesus died for you and for me, Thank you,Jesus"!!!
--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.I used to search cent rolls weekly, but I had to take a break when it stopped being fun. Just got bored, but I had some good times and pulled some decent varieties.
I was able to find 3 1995 doubled dies, the 1994 ddr, a few of the 1972 ddo's (not the big one), and a lot of rpms. Even pulled a couple of Indian Head cents.
My best pull was a 1983 DDR which I sent in to PCGS, and they graded it MS64RD:
Dead Cat Waltz Exonumia
"Coin collecting for outcasts..."
That's a great looking cent
A delightful pursuit can be working on the Whitman blue 1975 to date book. Making a nice RD collection strictly from circulation. This is also a great way to starting off a YN. My daughter is coming back to civilization after 3 years on the rock known as Sitka Alaska. I asked her to bring a few rolls of cents back.....
Yes I agree....a fun and cheap pursuit....although extremely challenging.
I'm putting together a RD 1975-date set as well as an RB set and an (if possible) BN set.
Yes, literally on the ground. In a parking lot.
Thankfully, I wasn't too lazy to pick it up.
I usually pick up any coins I spot on the ground. They add up after several decades.
You found yours on the ground too?
I forgot to mention that I've found 3 of the 2,650 DDRs listed for the 2009 FY issue in change in the last several months.
It has been a long time since I searched cent rolls... actually have a couple I have not searched...been sitting in a drawer for about five years... This thread has me wondering.... may have to open those rolls...
Cheers, RickO
RickO, the way your luck has been running, it wouldn't surprise me if you were to find a 14D Lincoln.
"Jesus died for you and for me, Thank you,Jesus"!!!
--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.Maybe a function of the area of the country. On the random occasion I get a roll or two of cents, there are often 71, 69 and 78s (Chicagoland.) Very very seldom, one of the S-mints, but they have popped up before.
A couple months ago, a member of the coin club was presenting cents for the month's show and tell theme. At one point, he described today's cent as "biodegradable". I have seen this myself without searching cent rolls. For some reason, that point has really stuck in my head
I've pulled 1970 half dollars. (a couple only after boxes upon boxes)
good things are out there.
I have a giant box of Lincoln cents in dated rolls. Honestly I have NEVER looked at these since I put them in there decades ago, just the dates to separate them. One day I'll take a look. Probably when I get me new glasses.
The 1971 especially has been hard to find for years.
May be a function of geography/distribution, as you said, because I doubt many travelers carry cents with them.
Can't disagree. I'm sure if I took a group of say, 1000 cents at random from a local bank, certain dates wouldn't be represented in my area. :-)
