I have a morgan similar to that, but looks better.
Edited to add: Doesn't take much to improve on that example though.
That is butt ugly textile toning....ugh
bob
There's a thread going about this coin on another foum. The OP found an earlier photo of the coin where the pattern was much less dark
Interesting that there are so many bidding on it. I'm not usually a fan of dipping, but in this case, I'd happily make an exception...... wouldn't hurt the reverse any either.
If it's too far gone to dip, it's too far gone to be worth owning. That dark stuff might be approaching terminal damage. It would all depend on if luster could be seen under the dark stuff.
Yeah I'd like to know what happened, the NGC photo shows the toning much lighter. It looks like it turned in the holder. Does someone have the link to the other forum discussion?

I also looked at that auction. I don't think there's any recovery from that.

It almost looks black mold... yuck! I call that environmentally damaged.
Not attractive....
I also like the way the auction heading leads you to think it's a 62* (star).
Somewhat misleading.
Wow, sold for 67% of price guide at $2,247.00!
Honeycomb toning. It's all the buzz.
Those NGC scans are never a good way to assess a coins appearance. They're always washed out and not intended to be Trueview quality type pics.
That being said, I don't like that coin either.

My Washington Quarter Registry set...in progress
This is the type of toning that should have diminished the value of the coin. But it sold for pretty strong money, considering.
OINK
At $2.2k, somebody believes in it.
In the end, it is still a key date

To be fair, i have never seen a coin with that. So I would say it is pretty "unique".

Interesing! You think it turned in the holder?

UGLY!
That is just hideous.
That is a very ugly coin.... looks similar to some experiments I did years ago....I am reasonably sure I could duplicate that...although I would not do it on a coin of value... Cheers, RickO
Agreed...
Poor thing, forgot her sun screen.:)
