Years ago a dealer returned 35,000+ Crack out labels to PCGS...

StoogeStooge Posts: 4,673 ✭✭✭✭✭

Its been a while since news of anyone returning a large amount of labels to keep the pop report somewhat accurate.
Have you turned in any lately, and how many?

Later, Paul.

What was the source of that info? I do recall when Contursi turned in approx 13,000 inserts iirc. And there were many high powered coins in that groups such as gem proof $3 gold coins.

13k vs 35k...it's all the same. We all know how flexible and easy numbers are to change and morph as time moves on and memories fade.

Sounds a bit inflated. Any time a dealer sends back a PCGS holder chances are he acquired it with a PCGS coin. He sent back the ones that had a high end PCGS coin and wanted a few more points before he resold the coin.

Yes, it was 13,000 and if I recall David Hall matched the donation.
Sorry about the lapse in memory.

13535...Wow...that is a lot of crackouts....And just for one dealer... imagine how many others have been cracked out... and I would wager that a vast number of labels have never been returned. Cheers, RickO

Among the old inserts returned by Contursi were:
42 certified 1879 and 1880 $4 "Stella" pattern gold pieces with a combined estimated value of over $5 million
130 round and octagonal 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition $50 gold commemoratives valued at over $5 million
168 High Relief 1907 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles valued at over $3 million.

may the fonz be with you...always...

Crack outs and the subsequent gradeflation are as insidious as the coin doctors with their putty and sulfur. Unfortunately, both are here to stay, woven in the fabric of numismatics for as long as there is a dollar to be made. :'(

It would certainly bring the numbers down a notch if everyone who "cracked" a slab of any TPG to the grading company o they could take it out of the system. Fifty cents per insert is not much of an incentive for returning them though.

After 13000 crackouts, did he finally get the grades he wanted?

I have a zip lock baggy where I put the labels so I do not lose them. They will eventually be sent in with a submission. I try to collect them from others also if they do not turn them in.

I have a few to return on significant but not big shot coins. The incentives are too weak.

    .
i am astonished i've never seen a "jar" or something set up at coin shows for cert gathering. with as many as could be turned in, seems the proceeds could go to YN program or donations in the name of numismatics etc.

perhaps a dealer could raise a bit of funds for him/herself. as many as try to eek out an extra few bucks, this seems like it would be a way to bring in a few bucks.

is it still .50 per insert?

Russ used to post a big pile he made.

I didn't know Russ personally but from everything I have seen and read here, he was a true gentleman in everything he participated in. JMO

You get money for returning labels? I think they missed me with some funds...

I've never had any PCGS labels (for obvious reason), but I have had others went into file 13.

I think they only give you money for the returned labels if you specifically ask for them to give you money.

I've returned labels a few time and have never been paid.

  • roadrunnerroadrunner Posts: 28,313 ✭✭✭✭✭

Use to send back labels all the time....didn't know you got paid for it....lol.

Do the TPG swap labels (or the label information) from crossovers? I have a few cracked labels, but if I was cracking them to put in the 7070 (or my other album) I keep the label.

when I first started collecting,I cracked out some Accugrade coins ans sent them to PCGS.....boy did I get an education!!!

  • dpooledpoole Posts: 5,940 ✭✭✭✭✭

I think that years ago you used to get $.50 an insert for returning it. Discussions about bounties have faded a lot in recent years, though. I didn't know PCGS still did that...
