The one that got away... (Cheerios Dollar story)

It's a painful memory to dredge up, but I do recall at a flea market seeing a Cheerios dollar and penny set in a tray with Star Wars action figures and Beanie Babies. This was before it was discovered as a variety. I don't know what they wanted for it, but I bet it was well south of $50.

So many of these went to non-collectors, I wonder how many are just sitting in the back of desk drawers, forgotten.

I found one on eBay in '04 and got it for $4K. Sent it to PCGS where it graded MS 68. It was the first one PCGS ever broke out of the original blister pack according to Jaime Hernandez who wrote a nice article and included that original package, in the now defunct Rare Coin Market Report rag.
I eventually sold the coin in a private sale, last year. The collector found it on my website and I hope he is ever grateful as I sent him that magazine and original (empty) pack. It's one of my favorite modern coin stories and coins ever. ... Except for my sister dying the very moment Jaime called me back in '07 to say PCGS received the coin for submission, anyway... that was a painful memory.

That one got away, too, now. C'est la vie.

Have never seen one in the Cheerios packaging (other than at auction)

One of these days, I am hoping one comes in with a box of junk over the counter, where somebody happen to get one and tossed it in a drawer years ago

isn't it funny how stuff like that works? i remember having all types of opportunities to buy air jordan shoes, but passed because i was not interested. fast forward to today, where some sell for big $$.

Before it was discovered what they were, I just wanted to add a Cheerios Dollar in original packaging to my collection. Over a several years period I probably turned down about 5 or 6 in the $125-$135 price range. I just didn't feel like they were worth that much and would eventually drop in price. I was holding out for one at $50 or less. THANK GOODNESS I did manage to get one for just under $50 before the discovery was made.

^ Well, it is a good story, still. I held that coin for a long time and eventually tripled my money, as it were.
Since then, I've lost a niece (her daughter) , and my mom.
And we all lose loved ones along the way. Thanks for that reminder, TopO.

Being a variety collector, I have always wanted one of those, but settled for the "Wounded Eagle" instead

Yes, this coin is highly sought after to this day! I too have been hunting down this one. It'll be worth the labor if finally found in the wild. as mentioned, the "wounded Eagle" also is a cool coin. Your OP falls into the category of the "wouldas, couldas and shouldas!" LOL I too am kicking myself on other coins that I let get away. I remember, when the 2008 Silver Eagles first came out. I was the one to show my Dealer friend before he heard of it being a reverse of the 2007's. and my friend is a variety expert. I, for some strange reason, didn't even keep one! Why? I don't know? Come to think of it, I might of discovered it before the one that supposedly did first discover it? I hope this makes you feel better about letting your SaCag. coin get away?

It would have been so easy, back in the day, for a supermarket stockboy to bring a metal detector to work and help himself to any boxes that contained a SAC dollar as opposed to a Lincoln. Of course, it wasn't know at that time that this coin was a rare variety, it was just a buck......
