I started this coin addiction on accident separating my sons coins in different jars

It started with a 1964 penny that interested me and before I knew it I went through every piece of coin I had with the loupe I had purchased. I would appreciate opinions on this picture please. (A 1975 No Mint Mark Dime)

    Welcome to the hobby!
Your 1975 dime was made in Philadelphia. 586 million were made, so it is a fairly common coin.
The P mint mark was not used on dimes until 1980.
A great book for starting out is the Red Book ("A Guide Book of United States Coins", by R.S. Yeoman).
It contains lots of info like mint marks and quantity made, and some basic info on grading coins.
Most of us started out with this book. You can buy a copy for around $13 at Amazon:
    https://amazon.com/Guide-Book-United-States-Coins/dp/0794843042/
Most libraries also have copies from a few different years.

    Welcome!
The more you learn, the more you will want to learn.
There are still intetesting coins to be found in circulation.

  • Thank you guys very much. Ok, now there is obviously an error with this coin with the "WE" from in God we trust and on the back side letters "USU" ON E.PLURIB(US U)NUM? Right! I know I have alot to learn.

  • So this is the 1964 penny that caught my interest.

The 'We' on the dime appears to be PMD (post mint damage)... The word 'trust' appears to have shelf doubling... the same on the cent.... shelf - or mechanical - doubling does not add value...
Good eye though... and often valuable coins can be found in change... most of us check our change closely...
Welcome aboard @FRAnKyJCS... hope you enjoy the forum... Great people here and fantastic expertise... Cheers, RickO

You can purchase rolls of wheat cents inexpensively on eBay and have a lot of fun looking thru them. An Indian cent or 2 might even show up!

    I love them Barber Halves.....

You already have bonus points for not spelling your magnifying device 'LOOP'!
I've learned SO much here, AND, received answers from Experts in their field of collecting.
And, made a few I-net 'friends as well.

It's kind of addicting, but nothing passes the time so easily and so pleasantly quiet, as searching through coins. I need help. Welcome bro'.

Hi and Welcome to school! I say school because you'll not only be taught about coins but in many other areas such as, in ethics, manners and in business. Just as you witnessed for yourself in the short time you're here. Our Forum is very wise and on their toes to answer any question, whether it's simple or tricky. You started on a good foot. first by asking questions and then by acknowledging what was just taught to you. I see you're into error coins or variety coins. To learn even more about error/variety coins, try to pick up a book written by, Ken Potter. He has many out there and inexpensive as well. There are a couple of pocket size books from him that can get you started. Error/variety coins are Cool! That's what I enjoy the most. It just brings something else to the table of the Hobby. not to mention the additional profit one can make by using that Loupe for something other than just taking a glance at the beauty of a coin. Remember, always to post often and don't be a stranger. also, the most important part is to have, FUN! You're right, this is very addicting and very interesting. Once again, Welcome to the Forum. - joey :)

It's me again. I just dug up Ken Potter's books that will interest you, I'm sure. He has two Volumes out in this series. It's called, "Strike It Rich With Pocket Change" Vol.1 and 2. Like I said, very inexpensive. You can probably buy both for near $30. These books will teach you what to look for and where specifically on the coin. A very good and fun read. Good Luck in your endeavors.

Welcome!!!!! You may want to ask your bank if they have some half dollar rolls and search for the ones that are all silver on the edge. They can be 40% or 90% silver and worth a little money.
