Post a 1923-S Walker (any AU58's out there)

cmanbbcmanbb Posts: 1,059 ✭✭✭✭✭

While the pops are real skimpy in regards to the AU58, I'd like to see how many are owned by forum members. I have 2 that I'm very proud of. The first I had to pry out of the hands of an owner who refused the first 4 offers, but I had to have it as there were and still are none to be seen as nice IMHO. The second has that original "skin" that is obvious at first glance. I do have a 3rd example, but it's a lowly AU55 grade.

All examples are welcome....even those choice MS ones

The obverse and reverse really are different in color.

I don't have one close to AU, but this example looks ok IMO.

I had almost finished a graded set (VF-AU) but lost interest in finishing. I was lacking the AU53 (just don't like that grade for some reason) and a VF35...........

PCGS has only graded 159 in all AU grades 50 thru 58. There are a mere 53 graded in AU 58.

As aficionadas of the series know, this is a truly scarce coin in true AU. Once thought a sleeper, Bruce Fox's book revealed it's true scarcity many years ago.

I see more 21P and D walkers, by far, than 23S's. IMO only the 20D and 21S is rarer in AU.

I own a PC55 that I don't have photos of, that I cherried at slightly above AU Bid some years ago, and have sold several raw ones over the years that I believe should or did wind up in 58 holders. One that I know was submitted came back 55 and the owner was so furious with PCGS he would up getting bammed from the forum. The coin was a lock 58, with a full strike, no, no problems, and good luster, and I imagine over the years wound up with that grade. The other was a raw coin I cherried at AU Bid at a show here in FL a few years back. The coin had a small scratch on the obverse I didn't like but otherwise had just a trace of rub with full original creamy luster. I flipped it to a dealer friend 2 min later for a nice profit. The coin changed hands 4 times at that show, with the last dealer believing it would go MS.

I remember when you posted a picture of this coin........it was gorgeous. The strike was great and, though there was likely rub, it was tough to see in the images.

Just FYI--All you have to do is save it to your computer (if it isn't already) and then click the 'attach file' icon (second from right) and select it from your photos on your hard drive.

Ok, let's see how this works. I should have removed it from the 'coin world' holder, or at least wiped the lint off of it, and taken better photographs, and kept it for myself. But it was on a good customer's want list, and I was well compensated to part with it.

Yes, you don't see many of these with distinct thumb separation and other central details.
I was unemployed at the time (2009), and the $600 profit with one phone call was too tempting.

Here is mine, a 30! This date is very tough in most circulated grades once you eliminate the blast white and abused coins.

Back in the early 1960s, when Liberty Walking Halves were still common in circulation, the coins dated 1933 and earlier were very seldom encountered unless heavily worn. I don't recall ever seeing decent looking 1923-S. Seeing as many nice looking ones as are shown in this thread is a treat!

    Hey, I recognize that XF40 :)
I was at the Lakeland show, waiting my turn to look at a wholesale dealer friend's box stock of raw walkers and Barbers. The other dealer ahead of me pulled this one out, put it back, then pulled it out again and bought it with a few other coins.
Feeling brash, I offered him a $20 profit on the spot for that coin, and he took it. Except for the minor pin scratches, it's one of the most wholesome XF's I had ever seen.

I kept the AU55 just because it was AU55. I hope one day that the AU58's I have will one day command the respect $$ they deserve in regards to other dates, namely the 21P & 21D.

I'll have to dig up a picture of my 20D in P58 too.

It's the pic IMO. The coin is nice no question, but was probably wiped at one time. I think the Host graded it accordingly, as it had a shot at an AU58.

Bought in the 1950s from a New York dealer. It was housed in a Whitman album for decades and recently consigned raw, which we graded last month. There were sets of Half Dollars, Quarters and Dimes.

I appreciate your opinion. I was not "picking" on this example, just saying I hope to find another example with more eye appeal. Huh, I may not? This example along with my 2-23-S and a 28-S is part of my box of 20. If I'm fortunate enough to find another example, then I'll have 2 in my box of 20.

Sadly, I have no 20D to share....I have never owned a slabbed example, having either passed on or been outbid on the few I've seen in AU, and never owned a raw coin higher than VF30.

The 20-D is a bear too, I was fortunate to come across a PCGS graded VF-30 and an AU-50 within a month of each other, after a very long wait of finding a decent one.
