Super Bowl coin flip.

Anyone here know what happens to the coin after the flip? Aside from being returned to the referees pocket. Perhaps to the NFL vaults for a future display in the NFL HOF? What became of previous coins used? Who/whom chooses the type of coin used? Value?

    I read earlier today that former President George H. W. Bush is going to flip the coin at Super Bowl LI. Perhaps he gets to keep it.

    I see from the link that it is only one of 10,000 to be minted by The Highland Mint before the dies are destroyed. Curious how close to the maximum past special issue Super Bowl coins have been minted, and whether that number is known. I purchased such a coin for a Rose Bowl game though it was minted in a much smaller number.

    If I remember correctly, the "coin" is in an enclosure of some kind (air-tite or similar).

    Even this is commercialized. They flip coin number 1, and I would guess whoever flips it, gets to keep it. What is a bit disingenuine are the terms "Fine" plate and "24k Gold Highlights." This is the NFL, you think they can use $18 worth of Silver. Reminds me of the Olympics, Gold and Silver Medals are just plated. I can kind of understand the gold (but not really) but the Silver Metals? Silly.

    Maybe they will slab it first then flip it in the slab. :)

    Wonder how much they would charge PCGS, NGC or one of the others for the honor of slabbing the Super Bowl coin and a mention before the flip?

    If they were to slab the coin beforehand and then flip it, there would be a disputation to the legitimacy of the flip by the losing side...guaranteed!

    Since this was the first Super Bowl that went to overtime, I was wondering if the OT coin toss was the same coin as pre-game or another one.

    So are there 2 coins - or just 1?

    Well... that tells us what happens to the coin right after the game... but not where it goes after authentication. Someone gets to keep it... Who might that be? Cheers, RickO

    "Following the game, a portion of the PSA/DNA-authenticated items will be auctioned on www.nflauction.nfl.com to benefit NFL and team charities. The remaining items will be split between the organizations of the two competing teams."

    I looked but couldn't find any of the coins listed on the NFL's auction page.

    I've never seen a Super Bowl "toss coin" for sale. That would be cool. I wonder if Heritage would put that in a sports auction or a numismatic auction?

    Too bad the officiating crew isn't cut in on the loot. I would think the referee would put dibs on the coin, since he's the one tossing it.
