4th MS67BN Wheatbacked Lincoln was recently graded

A rare grade in the Brown Color Class.
There are only 4 known PCGS MS67BN Wheatbacked (1909-1958) Lincolns.
The other 3 MS67BN's are a 1916-D, 1956-D, and 1957-D.
There is no Price listed in the PCGS Price Guide for this coin yet, but based on the coins around it, I am guessing the Guide Price will probably be 30k to 40k. But I dont know that for certain.

It's not mine by the way. Not sure who owns it. They must be thrilled though!

A tainted red:) Nice coin.
Would have like to have seen a TrueView or CoinFacts photo of it, but none was taken.

theres always a smile there with them
Looks like a nice coin, but not seeing why this example was seen as being more special than the many MS65BN and MS66BN examples out there that look virtually perfect with great color and luster. An MS67BN should blow you away...

Sweet coin. I can dig the brown. Thanks for sharing.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
already CAC'd? how did you get the pic?
Surfaces must be near perfect, and I agree with the brown designation. Too much brown to be RB.
It was not even imaged for Coinfacts. That's a mystery.
Indeed the reverse doesn't seem to uphold the highest grade ever assigned. Some of the 66s on Coinfacts do look better, at least in images that is.
Agree with the thought that I was expecting something pretty special when I opened the thread and it looks like pretty much any other Lincoln
I am thinking it might just be the image. You can't find a mark on him though. Nice!
It would appear that this is a ripe area for future grade population expansion. I see no reason why MS67 BN Lincolns should be way less populous that say MS67 RB. The current ratio is 33.75 to 1. Finding flawless coins is probably not the issue. Brown coins might not have the luster pop that is normally expected of MS67 coins. As of July 2007 there wasn't a single MS67 BN graded yet.
Great looking penny.
Wouldn't that be a RB under the 5-95% criteria?.....seems like you could say it's at least 5% red. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather own it as a BN, just wondering.
Up until very recently, it seemed that when the color designation went down, the coin would lose a numerical grade point as well.
So an MS68RD coin that fades to RB would never regrade MS68RB. Instead it would max out at MS67RB. And if that same coin fades down to BN, it would get MS66BN max.
I realize you probably won't read that in any grading guides, but that's the way it works. Look at the population report of the 1909 VDB Lincoln cent and you'll see that pretty darn clearly.
So in the minds of the graders, to get a grade of MS67BN, they would think that the coin would have the surface quality and luster to have gotten and MS69RD grade if the color were red. Very few wheat cents get that grade. That is why you don't see MS67BN coins, up until very recently that is...

It's a very nice coin, but I personally can't tell the difference between this and any of the MS66BN coins I've come across or owned. The strike looks a bit soft on the obverse, as well.
I believe I graded the very first MS67BN from a mint set. A lovely color coin that I still own. If I am not mistaken, the second coin was a 67RB dropped down to a 67BN? Is that right WL57? Anyway, I believe those first two coins (56-D and 57-D) were real dazzlers in the way of color.
Wondercoin
It may be accepted as a 67 but I don't see it holding the estimated value stated in the OP.

It was only two years ago that the first 09-S VDB was graded in 67 RB, and it remains a pop 1/0. It got the nod on the grade because of its look. It is, IMO, the finest and most eye appealing coin of its date. They couldn't give it a RD designation because of its rainbow colors.
Could be the unwritten grading standard illini420 elucidates is winding down and RD is no longer the be all.
That's my point. Rules and former ways often go by the way side to continue to draw in submissions. An unwritten rule back in 1989 was that no obverse portrait type coin could grade higher than MS/PF 64 with a facial hairline. That went away in the mid to later 1990's. "Rules" do change.
Do collectors of top-pop coins consider BN an option for Lincoln cents that are common enough in RB or RD a grade lower? Seems to me that this is a sub-$10K coin regardless of its population.
That coin deserves more respect than it is receiving on this thread.
I thought the strike seemed a bit weak too.
Grading standards are changing...again. Wait another year, and there will be a dozen or more in 67 BN.
Very nice cent.... certainly looks 'all there' for the grade.... strike quality wise... To me, it is definitely BN... do not see and 'RD' in those pictures... Cheers, RickO
Beautiful coin but you see these in 65 BN holders all the time.
I like it.

I gotta say I like it a lot
. A gorgeous example .
I agree with others -- I don't see anything "MS67-special" about this coin.

Buy them all up and send them in. When you have a bunch of 67's, please come back and post them for us all to enjoy!
Looks like a nice coin to me. I would be proud to own it.
Wabbit, I've been doing just that for a long time. I'd double down and say that
If you took all the svdbs in 65-66 in BB and RB from both services and laid them out, I wouldn't think the ops coin would jump out. No one is even gonna call it out for being too blue?
That being said, I believe the BN designation has been held back technically for a long time. Very hard to make a 65 BN and 66s truely special or a grading gift. Literally being snubbed by both services I would say, for not being red. Illini laid it out perfectly.
My core collection of coins are Lincoln's in 65 and 66 BN and I would stand to gain quite a bit if this marks a new line of demarcation for grading upward mobility. Frankly though, I'll pass as the coins I chose to buy I bought for their appeal to my eye (and cost) not so much the technical grade.
Thanks, Matt
Somebody got lucky, IMO. If the photos are accurate then I seen too much discoloration in the fields, especially on the obverse around the bottom center of "LIBERTY". It doesn't seem to have the eye appeal of a 67. Just my opinion. If it were an Indian HC - not a 67 BN, ever.
