Toned 1900 Morgan I just made.

sparky64sparky64 Posts: 7,048 ✭✭✭✭✭

This was probably not worth sending in but it's been kicking around my desk for a long time and I like the look of it.
The colors pop a bit more that the Trueview shows, especially the blues around the rims.
Morgan aficionados can chime in but I don't see many 1900's with color.

I once showed it to a dealer and he said it was an AU but I wasn't convinced. Decent full luster under the toning.

MS62

It's interesting you mentioned what the dealer said about it being AU because when I saw the images my first impression was an AU58.

If this coin really is fully BU, it should grade much higher than MS62. I'm guessing it's a slider with tremendous eye appeal that got market graded up to MS territory. I would think its true market value would be many multiples higher than a typical AU/BU coin. The toning pattern is very nice and there is nothing distracting. Non-coin people would prefer this over a technically nice, white MS66 coin 9 times out of 10.

I was thinking myself that it looked 65 or 66. I have an 1883 cc Morgan that graded MS63 that looks way worse than the pics I see.

I agree that it is interesting.
When I say I wasn't convinced that it was AU I also wasn't 100% sure it would grade MS either.

@BryceM makes a great point about it maybe being an eye appealing slider. I'm buyin' what he's sellin'.

I'm gonna take a slightly different tack on this and say it's a net graded unc with unoriginal surfaces. The toning is muddy and slightly negative to my eye - and the services just kill unc Morgans without full flowing luster (since they are so common that way)

I was going to stay quiet. The grading, shipping and trueview fees are more than the coin is worth. That toning is not sought after at all, as was already mentioned. The coin also looks 66 so as TDN highlighted, it received the sympathy 62 for some reason. (I always call net grading, sympathy)

I've admitted that it probably wasn't worth sending in but I'm glad I did.
At least I'm getting my money's worth in tuition and experienced opinions which I sincerely appreciate.

Toning not sought after? I sought it!!! I agree with the grading sentiments, but love the toning!

I like it, how did you make it?

Weird how so many view a coin sometimes. This is coin I would be a little concerned about as well to give it a higher grade.

In your title you say you "..just made..." the coin... What method did you use to tarnish it like that? Did it take long or was it the fast method with fan/box? Cheers, RickO

By "made" I meant that I sent in a raw coin for grading.
That's what happens when I try to be flippant.

I agree with the net grade 62. But it's a pretty net grade 62.

AT MS62 that toning must be hiding a whole bunch of stuff. I just cannot see a 62 in that photo. But I have to say, I was in the AU58 camp the first time I saw it.

The lack of true luster probably inhibits the grade, a little bit- yes?

The toning is great but the hair strands above the ear (more missing than is normal for strike issues), the eagles left leg and left wing tip suggest wear of some type.

Still a pleasant coin that you'll appreciate.

Three or four point/interval net grading seems extreme. Wouldn't the services just use a details grade at that point if the problems are that severe?
