JSG Boggs out of jail but still in hot water

Here's a recent news report on the subject of controversial money artist JSG Boggs. I provide it as an update on his situation, since little news about him has surfaced since his jailing in Florida eight years ago. You may notice from the video that Boggs seems to have fallen upon some pretty hard times for himself personally, which is perhaps even more noticeable in the longer clip of the Discovery Channel preview that is referenced in the report. He comes across as an aging intellectual whose star has fallen. It seems like such a far cry from his faculty position at Carnegie Mellon, where he taught Art and Ethics, to his meteoric rise in the art world for his challenging currency reproductions and his friendly relations within the numismatic community. Much of it seems so ironic as to be unbelievable.
All the bad news aside, I still like the guy and have a certain empathy with him, and hope that he can turn things around and get back on top.

I'm pretty much a live-and-let-live guy; I don't care what color someone paints their house, but I do care when I have to pay for medical treatment when I get poison sumac from their damned weeds that grow through to my side of the fence. I don't think it's too much to ask to at least mow your lawn or use a weed whacker, or hire a kid to do it for you (I made good money in HS doing just that in fact).
It's not about imposing one's views on others; it's about protecting property values and about safety, not to mention having some pride, common courtesy and respect for your neighbors. This isn't about some homeowner association snobs telling someone what color he can paint his house or complaining about a satellite dish on his roof. They simply want him to get rid of the junk and mow down the weeds. I think that if you actually had to live next to a property like this you'd be singing a different tune. I speak from experience.
I had a neighbor much like this not too many years ago...random junk in the yard, usually un-mowed unless he either felt like it or more usually when the city wrote him up threatening fines, etc. In the warm months I couldn't go out into my own back yard at dusk or later because of the mosquitoes that bred in the stagnant water in various random objects in this guy's yard, and I got nailed with poison ivy and sumac more than once when trimming weeds on our common fence line. Offers of help were made and rejected with a great deal of antipathy and cursing. I didn't want to be labeled as the jerk who turns people in, so I let it go and just tried to keep it under control on my side of the fence... but either the neighbors on the other side or behind him apparently weren't as tolerant and finally had enough. When an inspector from the city came to me asking for info I was truthful but fair, telling him basically what I just related here.
Edit to add that he moved about two years after the incident in question.

I am an artist and know many artists, and yes the vast majority of us are indeed crazy.

And therein lies the rub: It does 'harm' some, and more times than not- they're the ones in power to discipline and prevent.

Ever been to Gettysburg? If so have you have seen the purple house in town? Well our lovely goverment fought hard to have it repainted! WHY? Can a person not do what they wish? What harm is it in painting a house purple? I think it looks good honestly and I am glad that the home owner did not give. Taxes in this town are as high as new york but yet battlefield purists want things just the way the soldiers seen it. They don't want no family attractions or air ballon rides. Well they give them what they want. REMOVE ever dam monument while they are at it. Then they can open up the wallets they carry and contribute so my dam taxes can go down insteadof up! I am tired of paying 10 grand a year so I can make other ppeople happy. Kiss my....well you get my point. Same thing here

I recently watched a news story about a woman at an Iowa University that is studying the correlation of highly creative people and mental illness, especially depression. She has documented with brain
scans that there is a much greater incidence of illness among this group. One of the test subjects I remember was James Cameron of Avatar fame. Sounds like this guy might be in this group as well.
I am shocked reading this thread and joined here just to reply. I can tell most of you are not artists. Just a small update JSG Boggs died last Sunday 1/22/2017.. I knew Boggs before and after his legal problems. Boggs like most artists of his caliber had many demons he had to deal with on a daily basis. I am literally shocked the man made it so long. Which to me makes his art even better.
Perhaps instead of bashing the guy maybe reflect upon what his art did for the collectable currency market. For the record he was a hoarder and his struggle with that did produce some fine art work.
Sorry to hear, and it is unfortunate his art has fallen out of favour. He had an exceptional talent.
Boggs was definitely an interesting artist. On some level my fantasy-date over-strikes are a type of "performance art" like Boggs' activities. Although I never met him and I have never owned any of his work, it is still sad to hear that he has passed.

This is really bad news. I started worrying that someone would post he had died when I opened the thread and saw it was several years old. I am saddened that my worries turned out to be true.
Very sad news. As mostly a paper collector, I really enjoyed his artwork. I hope to get a note someday.
I also am sad to hear....I've tried to pickup a piece of his here or there but can't swing it. Those currency reproductions were so special. Rest in peace JSG......
I read his Wikipedia page and several other biographical articles. Quite an interesting individual. Had not known of his 'bills' before. Cheers, RickO
