Are you aware of a coin that has gone through all of Top III TPG companies...

...and received different grades each time? I just acquired a nice Seated Half Dime, and according to it's present owner/seller, it has gone through ANANCS, NGC and finally PCGS and received three different grades. I won't divulge the specifics (yet), but he is sending along at least the NGC gasket and label insert that it was cracked out of and sent to PCGS for it's present encapsulation.

It is not a rare coin, but the eye-appeal is where it is at, IMO. Apparently this coin visited each of the TOP III in alphabetic order (ANACS then NGC and finally PCGS) and the grade of the coin was not the same between any of them...with a three grading point range in opinion.

    I have a 1880-O that made it through NGC ICG and PCGS as a little experiment. I bought it in an NGC MS61 Holder for a song... cracked out sent to ICG received a MS62. Then cracked out sent to PCGS and received a MS62. I sold it on Ebay shortly after and recouped almost everything I put into it.

    I have also crossed PCGS/NGC to ICG and ICG to PCGS and most every single time I get the exact same grades except once I had a ICG AU58 1887-S upgrade at PCGS to MS61.

    Things I like to do: Collect PL Morgans. That’s is all.

    Good to know @hutze1nm . I was recently considering a ICG $20 gold Liberty head and was curious about how the grades compared to PCGS.

    Some of the grading services especially Anacs and Icg get hung up on "technical" grades which translate to better market grades at NGC and PCGS. I have had upgrades from lesser services to the main two.

    I am surprised that we haven't been mauled yet for mentioning any sort of parity in grading ability between ICG and the Big 2.

    In my view, the main result would be more to cross to PCGS so more coins and business with our hosts.

    Closest thing I got was 3 different grades between PCGS and NGC on 3 consecutive submissions within 2 months of each other...............NGC MS64, PCGS MS63, NGC MS65.

    The price progression was $7500, $3750, $15,000. I sold the coin as a pop 1 finest graded after the 3rd try. Never would have had that opportunity had not PCGS gave it a lowly 63 where I was way underwater on it. I'd have been more than happy with a pair of 64's. Sometimes things fall into your lap.

    It's been said that Morgans are the easiest coins to grade. Frankly there's no excuse for ANACS or ICG not to get them mostly right.

    I am just happy with the coin I buy.... I have no doubt, if I were selling, I would certainly play in the regrade game.... and truthfully, looking at some nice slabbed coins I have, I do believe a couple would jump a grade after all the years I have had them....Cheers, RickO

    ive sent one coin to the same service five times and received five different results

    regardless of how many posts I have, I don't consider myself an "expert" at anything

    I have a 200-year old coin that was ANACS-58, NGC gave it a 61 and PCGS dropped it down to a 55. All these were crack-outs.

  • stevebensteveben Posts: 4,641 ✭✭✭✭✭

    nope, but i have a coin that has been graded 70 by both NGC and PCGS. i wonder how often that happens.

    My three most recent ICG bust halves are now in PCGS holders. All were cracked.
    61 --> 62
    62 --> 63
    62 --> 58 (and I think PCGS got this wrong)

    Lance.
