1837 Reeded edge 50c GR14

This coin looks like a late die state with the serious crack on the reverse. If this were sent back in would it straight grade or get a different GR # like a, indicating a later die state?

    No was looking for advice; I think I will send it in the holder to NGC to have them re-examine it for variety on the back. It looks like a later die state than just GR 14 or will be called problem planchet, lamination, etc..

    The grade may change, but the coin is still
    a GR-14 (JR-7) and it appears to be a late
    die stage. Some of the stages are not so
    apparent because the rev. was lapped
    removing some of the lumps & lines.

    Your coin is not a very late stage of GR-14. The later stages, post lapping, show an absence of tail feathers, and the lower border of the cut end of the olive brach is missing. Your coin shows both strong tail feathers, and also olive branch end. Without specifically speaking for NGC or PCGS, I would suspect they would follow whatever is published in the "Registry", and that does not designate a GR-14a, late die stage. I reserved the "a" designation for significant changes in the die progression, and therefore are not numerous. I would suspect that your coin would remain just GR-14, so save your money and enjoy your coin.
