List Here Or E-Bay or Major Auction

I sold a few things lately and decided that it may be time to unload a few better dated items that I have held onto since 1978. I am not sure if selling on E Bay would be the right venue, selling here or selling to a major auction house. The items hardly every come up in auction so I don't have a real history. I don't want to send the items in to be graded, I would let the buyer do that even if it meant a lower price. I have a unc roll of 1878-cc Morgan dollars and 40 gem BU 1883 V nickles No Cents that were minted at the same time because many coins have some of the same die characteristics. I saw a roll of the V Nickles sell for $2000.00 these are all super nice coins. What are the pros and cons of the choices I have listed? I took some pictures and then returned them to the bank while I decide if I really want to pull the trigger and sell. I move kinda slow, been selling these coins for over 40 years and I still own them. Thanks,

You can always set a price and list on BST to see if you get any takers. Else, I'd look at an auction house.

The roll of 78-CC I would break up and have graded by PCGS.

    Too much range in value (mS62: 420 MS65DMPL: 11000 ) price guide

On the V nicks, I would choose, in your opinon, and have them graded, and see where it lands.

A roll of either is a dealer priced item, and it will, at best, go for wholesale, and maybe lower, as the assumption is that it, at some time, was cherry picked.

Sorry Bucky but I agree fully that your dollars MUST be graded to realize anything near actual value. Once graded then the dollars should be scattered around between a couple bigger auctions. Heritage auctions, Scotsman, Fox Valley, etc.

The nickels I can buy around $20 each so. Those are very common so the BST and E-Bay should do the job.

Congrats on holding some great keepers.

I'd try to pick the best coins and send for grading. The nickels could go anywhere from 20 to 500 apiece(check ebay sell prices) but no way of telling until they are graded.

Issue .. The roll is nice. All coins MS 63 + .. Price guide MS 63 is $475.00 m MS 64 is $600.. MS-65 is $1550.00 The roll will grade MS 63 and MS 64.. Maybe one MS 65 if any maybe one MS 62 if any .. I want to keep the roll intact. They were in a plastic tube when I got them now they are in 2 x 2's. I can't see paying the price to get them graded just to come back MS-63 and MS 64. (This is what my last posts were about) I have very little into this roll it would be better if they were sold to a collector who could view the coins in person. I guess I would like just under 10K for the roll the buyer could then make their own mind up. By the way they would not be disappointed. ..

  • I would think you are going to either have to take to a large show where a dealer can see in person, or send to a dealer that you trust for an honest evaluation.

Grade the roll of 78cc's. Don't try to sell raw. This is not an original roll as there was no such thing. Perhaps from an original bag if they are all the same die pair?
    good luck,

Why not send them off to Great Collections...let them deal with getting them graded, sending to CAC if warranted, and then ultimately selling them. Seems like the best way to maximize the price received while minimizing the amount of work you have to do to sell them.

You might want to start a thread on the coin forum, describe everything in detail, put a price on it, ask where the best place to sell is. Oh, and make sure your PM feature is on. Good luck with them.

Continue ... It costs about $40.00 to get a coin graded That is $1600.00 .. Please tell me what I am missing. Postage, Insurance, Up and back... I just took a $1600 hit to have the coins graded by PCGS. I am out $1600.00 to have them in plastic. I am sure they will come back 63s and 64s .. Lets say worst case 50-50. Am I wrong on the grading price ? PCGS would be the only company I would use. Then not sure of the cost of the CAC stickering. Well if I have time in the next day or two I will post the roll and we all can have a peak. ]\

I know someone who can have them graded for less than half that in his pcgs bulk sub. The only problem is it takes 6-8 weeks for return as bulk subs are slow but the cost savings is way worth it. Let me know if you're interested and I can see if he can add them to his next one going out soon.

Economy submissions are $20 (each) for Members, plus $10 handling and then return shipping. A Platinum Membership gets you 8 coins graded for free.

Where did you get $40 a coin from?

Turn around currently is 27 work days. If you had these for years surely 6 weeks isn't a deal breaker however, as was suggested a few posts above, Ian at Great Collections can do all the work for you and that venue is also appropriate and quite reasonable for selling.

For coins at the prices that @mustangmanbob quoted, then not getting them graded first is penny-wise and pound foolish. A buyer of a raw coin only looking at photos will assume (and bid accordingly) that the coins are the lowest of the range. If they bid at all.

If you don't want to lay out money first you can send them to Great Collections, and they will arrange the grading and/or stickering and the cost comes out of the auction proceeds.

Or, if you have more time available, then there are cheaper ways to submit as noted above.

Selling here would be an option, or I would recommend a bigger auction house. Most likely you would get slaughtered on eBay for a higher value, raw coin. Even if you have fantastic photo skills, you are very unlikely to get a price worthy of any that are better quality.

    JMO of course.

Sounds like most of the opinions here are pretty consistent. We just don't want you to get the short end of the deal.

It's pretty hard to get anyone to buy coins worth over $200 if they're not already slabbed. Right or wrong, 90% of potential buyers will assume they have already failed with the TPGs and were cracked out of details holders to sell as "raw" coins. That's just how the market is now.

The Great Collections idea is a good one if you're looking to maximize the return/work ratio. The BST here is another option, but the offers you get will be on the low side. Even if you happen to be an expert, people will not trust your grading skills and will spend accordingly.

Have the coins been examined for any errors/varieties?

Yes most need to get graded if you want good money for them. I have some I just sent in for auction at Stacks a 1921-P half and a key date Morgan $ I think it's at 15K today. I have 20 more coins I'll be sending in but need to have them graded if you don't want to pay to have them graded send them to "Stacks" and they will pay for them to be graded and take it out of your pay at the end. They will work with you as well like give you the better pricing on grading as well. You can talk to Mr. Berkley.

    Hoard the keys.

Thanks for all your comments. The logic behind getting the coins graded is what I needed to understand. Looks like I will be sending these off for grading. Sending the coins for grading is one thing but sending them to Stacks or Great Collections does appeal to me. Sorry to be a pest but anyone what to discuss their positive or negative experiences with these companies or others in general. . I really want to sell these coins this year .. Thanks, again for your comments.. Bucky
Tom Bush Said, "You will generally realize a value commensurate with how much work you are willing to put into it, which at this point does not appear to be a great amount." Ok I get it Tom .... I have said this many times but never relating to coins. Thanks for the wake up .

    I would contact Ian at GreatCollections. He will submit RAW coins to PCGS for you at the following rates;

    PCGS Economy ($12 a coin, non-gold, max value $300, 30 day turnaround)
PCGS Express ($30 a coin, max value $20,000, 5 day turnaround)
    PCGS Walk-through ($80 a coin, max value $100,000, 2 day turnaround)
World Coins add $5 (per coin); Varieties add $12 (per coin)
PCGS Handling Fee (per submission): $10

He would also recommend sending to CAC if warranted (consignors discretion)
