Counterstamp / Countermark guys? W. L. Brecht?

WeissWeiss Posts: 9,942 ✭✭✭✭✭

Picked this up today and I've found a few vague leads but nothing solid. Counterstamped dollars themselves seem to be few and far between.

Any information appreciated.

FYI and in case you don't have the book, Brunk does not list it, so this counterstamp was unknown to him.

I'm addicted to exonumia ... it is numismatic crack!

Thanks, guys. It was one of those things where you did a double-take, then reached for your wallet :)

Quite possibly William Laurain Brecht (1851-1904), founder of the Flint Brick and Coal Company, Des Moines IA --- his first dollar earned?

Saw that on a google attempt. Date seems right, but it's not exotic or fascinating enough for my imagination ;)

Maybe William Junior tried to deface his fathers pocket piece before he spent it? ;)

What would be exotic or fascinating enough? :)

I believe most of the text list in the Brunk book has been online for awhile, at:
    exonumia.com/art/cma.htm
and as EXOJUNKIE said, W.L. BRECHT is not on this list.

I wonder why all the scratches on the reverse across the stamp.... seems like a weak effort to deface the stamp. Cheers, RickO

The scratches look to be under the name.

Yep. From what I can tell, the damage is under the stamp, as if the artist was trying to plane off a flat surface for their mark.
