2015 Silver Proof Set new low?

Annual Sets SW2 2015 SILVER PROOF SET 386049 12/26/2016

They have been selling 500 a week or less. Could there have been a late rush of 7,000? If wouldn't surprise me, but could be another one to watch on Tuesday!

I think in the modern era 2012 hold the low of 2012 Silver Proof Set with a mintage of just 393,757 sets

That is still a lot of sets.....and the way sets sit in dealers inventories and collector storage, I doubt if any significant value will be realized in the next fifty years. Cheers, RickO

  • Ricko, why is 2012 worth so much? I am asking that as a serious question. It isn't because of a low in set production? I remember something about the Kennedy Half that year.

@Paulyaces76..Not sure what you mean....the Limited Edition set? Cheers, RickO

Wasn't it the dime and half that had low numbers (total)?

I'm beginning to wonder if just low mintage numbers mean anything anymore without demand? ;)

The selling of these is likely being done on the TV shopping channels. They will set the demand.

A few reasons for the high price:
    (1) lowest mintage silver proof set
    (2) the silver proof dime and half dollar had the lowest mintages since the 1950s
    (3) the set went off sale earlier than expected; unlike the 2015 set, it wasn't available all the way up to the end of the next year (the 2012 sold out at the end of 2012)

U1 woundn't that make the first 2 true of 2015 if the numbers wind up being lower? Also, in 2012 they had the limited proof set with 50,000. 2015 they cancelled that set, so these numbers could be way lower then 2012!

Very likely! The 2012-S silver Kennedy half had a total mintage of about 440,000 from both sets, and routinely sells on eBay for over $100, raw or PR69. The 2015-S silver Kennedy half will likely come in under 400,000, making it the new proof key. I've picked up several in the $20 to $25 range, and expect them to go higher.

@Paulyaces76...Thanks...Perhaps, as stated above, the Kennedy or the Dime may eventually gain in value....I still think the sets will not appreciate for a long, long time....if ever. Cheers, RickO

I agree...I may well be wrong, but I can remember when 1973-S Proof Silver Ikes were $150.

  • The only reason the 2012 set sells for $200 plus was it was the king. The Kennedy was the king and sells all day for $100 raw! This has sent the set king packing by 8,000+sets and the Kennedy packing by 50,000+. Just don't understand the complacency here. The 2012's sell for a lot of money and they have been dethroned!

If the 2015 silver sets are that impressive, why are they selling all day on ebay for $60 shipped?

  • The 2012's took months to start going up. I would be selling all the 2012's I had, if I had any left!

They just went off sale at the Mint. I don't expect that price to be available all that much longer.

Silver Proof Sets are a market dud. They had their day and are now disappearing into the mist of excessive US Mint issues.

A 2012 silver proof set just sold on eBay for $210.

Once the TV people do the free advertising we may wish we all had a few dozen to sell.

I had to buy a silver proof '12 Kennedy raw on EBay for $109 for my Capital plastics set. I've gotten individual proofs straight from eBay ever since.

You guys almost have me wanting to buy the 2015 silver proof for $25. Keep talking and I just might pull the trigger ;)

I bought several. Mintage is only 88% of the 2012. I consider it a low-risk speculation.

I agree and bought two rolls. It's comes down to supply and demand. Lots out there right now but if supply gets tight we'll see prices rise.

Count me in as a hoarder of the 2015 silver Kennedy proof halves. This is a no doubt future hit imho. But please keep it quiet :)
