I consider Tom Bush to one of the leading authorities on Reeded Edge Halves within the industry as well as an extremely trusted and astute numismatist.

He is one of only three or four people I would trust to give a sum of money to and say: "Here, find me x, y and z. If you have to make a decision without me being able to see a pic or if you have to make a decision to reach for a special coin above a previously appointed price, go ahead and do it."

Luckily for me, Tom found a very nice cream of the crop common coin for my Reeded Edge set and I was able to get it. This will be coin #3 out of 5 for the set. 13 years to find 3 coins. But always so exciting when that right coin is found.

The 1838 is posted first, followed by the other two in the set. Interesting to note that the grades are:
1838 PCGS XF45 CAC, 1837 PCGS XF45 CAC and 1839-O PCGS XF40 Gold CAC. Look at the variations in wear, yet I consider each of these coins to be in the top 2% of XF graded coins available and in the top .1% of all RE halves available in general.

Enjoy the pics, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, feel free to post your own RE halves and please holler if you have a killer XF 1836 or 1839 to sell! :)

Very hard to find coins with that level of surface quality and originality.

If you looked in your rear view mirror, that was me on the 1838 :) Tom didn't say it went to you and I didn't ask but figured I was 99.9% right that it went to you.

I don't know why exactly, but I like the 37 best out of the three great coins. Sweet!

  • I agree that Tom Bush Is an excellent numismatist and a very trustworthy friend. I have had many successful dealings with Tom and he's a real gentleman.

  • Wow! Those 3 are beautiful, beautiful! I love early silver with the look of the 1837.
In fact, I also have 3 of the 5 coins needed for this great little set.... in xf 40-45 cac.

The thing is --- they don't look like this.

This past year I have purchased a couple of seated coins from Tom. He is a real gentleman.

Thank you for the shout-out! B) Thank you also to those who have written such nice things about other coins I have handled.

Truly, I know that coinlieutenant is one of the real connoisseurs for original, high-end for the grade coinage and even though I adored the 1838; I still did not know it would stick in the collection. I'm happy it has found a long-term home. It had been in my own little stash of coins for many years as a raw coin in a 2x2 cotton pouch inside a Kraft paper envelope. It's a great coin.

Yes it certainly is a superb example.
Has more appeal than most MS coins.
    Wow!

I love the strike, contrasts and smooth surfaces on that one.

Congratulations to you and to Tom. That set's what coin collecting is all about!

The three RE Halves are all great, but I love the 39-O,
probably because when I collected the series, I never
    found a great looking 39-O.

BTW, all the comments about Tom are correct, I would
also trust him with my cash to find me the right coin. I
just enjoy the hunt all by myself ....

Almost forgot. Great coin. It's the type of coin when available that some of us just say..... "I'll take it."

I did get a different coin from TomB and am very satisfied with it. I call it my consolation (I kid) piece. But very similar to your coin. Your coin is a bit more choice. Happy Now? Hope it was OK with TomB I spilt the beans. Heh
