What about an MS69 1938d buffalo nickel either/and pcgs or ngc??

BUFFNIXXBUFFNIXX Posts: 2,727 ✭✭✭✭✭

I once owned a pcgs ms67 buffalo nickel that was so nice in my opinion it should have been an ms68, at least! And I have seen other near-flawless gems that I think could have gone 69 except for the fact that there seems to be an aversion to do this.
Gonna happen someday? Maybe. When one shows up at either of these grading service that is near perfect and really does carry its own credentials it might happen. What do you think?

It's certainly possible but I think it's much more likely there will be a 68+ first. What about an MS69 pre-1965 Jefferson?

Nope. Simple odds indicate that fresh, untouched material no longer being made will become far less available in the years to come. With handling damage, dipping and cleaning and resubmitting the same coins for grading over and over the numbers of available premium coins are already inflated. If that diamond in the rough hasn't been found by now, it's never going to be found.

Now if grading standards change (again) then that's the only opportunity.

There are still coins out there never seen the light of day...stored /hidden . Friend's father has a collection of currency dates back to the 30's when his Grandfather was a bank teller,, still stored in albums , also coins from 1900- 30s ,

I saw many of the currency notes.. none in any census

Yes. It's almost a certainty that a MS69 Buffalo will be graded someday, though probably at NGC first. It will have to walk and talk on water though. There are already several dozen MS68's and a couple thousand MS67's...many of which have never been regraded. There has to be at least 1 worthy coin of that group that is better than all the rest. The next 10 years will probably bring the "first" MS68 or MS69 coin to many series. The TPG's require upgrades and crossovers to maintain their revenue streams. You can't just shutdown the advance of higher grades.

The kicker with the first MS69 Buffalo is that it can't happen without pushing many current MS67's into the MS68 grade range. The TPG's can't make money turning 1 or 2 of the few dozen MS68's into a 69. The money is going to come from turning some of the several thousand MS67's into dozens more MS68's. And turning a thousand(s) of those 30,000+ MS66's into MS67's.

I agree that it is just a matter of time before a coin gets blessed with that magical grade... especially with the number of regrades you hear about and see in this popular series...

Which, IMO, begs the question... Does a true 69 or 70 Buff exist without regrades...???? Cheers, RickO

What happens to the "assay" pieces that were sent from the first batch of coins? Did these wind up in the Smithsonian of some other museum? Would these have the best chance of getting primo grades?

It's out there. Many, MANY old school collectors just don't care to have their coins graded. Old school bud. I know a few.

Maybe if all the 68's were rounded up and resubmitted you might get an MS69 upgrade. But then again you'll probably get a bunch of down grades so...

    Here's a better question......

Does a buffalo nickel exist that would have deserved an MS69 grade during any period of the TPG era? All coins will eventually be MS70s if standards change enough......but the coins aren't actually improving. ;)

Were any buff nix minted nice enough? If you take Peace dollars, I can pretty much guarantee that it ain't gunna happen. There are only two MS68s, and they're probably just really nice 67s. That series just wasn't made well enough.

I'm surprised that it hasn't happen before now with the large number of colorful gems that exist for the date that is plentiful in unc.
It seems to me to be the most colorful date for buffalos and yet no 69s?
