Do you tell the dealers at shows........

stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭

1 Do you tell the dealers at shows you are a member of this message board? If so, what is their response? Not talking about the ones that hang here:)

2 Do you lead into the conversation saying you are a member here?

    Sometimes

The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

I never lead into it. I'm mostly there for the coins. Sometimes the subject comes up and other times it doesn't. But, I have met many forum members at coin shows. I have also made many friends at the same time.

No, I have never even thought about that honestly.. Seems like an odd topic to bring up considering I have no idea if they know about CU muchless are a member.

Agreed, I have met many forum members and member dealers. Is my OP in huge letters? If so not sure how that happened.

I really LIKE STMAN's signature line......."Please save the stories and just tell me how much!"

    I totally agree with that.

When I'm at a show; I know EXACTLY what I'm looking at........I just need to know a price, which tells me whether I'll pass or play.

I've mentioned this board and the other when some information I've learned is the subject of conversation. Credit where it's due.

I act like a total novice at shows. Let the dealers think that they have the upper hand.......it doesn't bother me, at all, as some of them act like they've got something to prove and I do not. It is none of their business who I am or what I know. I keep it to myself and don't tip my hand. I think that it gives ME the edge.....when they underestimate me. Besides, I don't want them trying to get top dollar from me, once they know that I'm a serious player.

I agree with this. I don't get social with anyone, unless I know them. Most dealers I approach, I don't say much other than ask how they are doing and act friendly. I play a lot of poker and won't tip my hand and divulge too much information about me. The less they know about me, the better off I am. Don't confuse that with me acting like a jerk, I am very nice and friendly, I just don't offer up information about me freely.

Yes, I too am always courteous and enjoy hob-nobbing with dealers at shows----it's fun and you can share non-personal, coin-related information.

Also, if I were to serendipitously run into other fellow board members, at a show; then I'd certainly let the board members know who I am, as I would enjoy meeting and talking with them.

Never. I want to keep the Forum guy separate from what I'm doing at coin shows. When I let one of my local shops know too much about what I was doing with coins....they just stopped showing me stuff.

I have met other forum members at shows, however, I have never mentioned the forum with dealers. I would definitely do so if I were at a show and Charmy had a table...... and I have met Russ, Bochiman and a few other members at shows....Cheers, RickO

I have met Charmy i Boston and she is as genuine as her posting. She's the only one that I have confessed to as being a forum member.

maybe we should have a badge so that when we walk up to dealers we can flash it.

I normally wear my "pin" that has my avatar on it when I am out in "circulation" at coin shows.

As being a collector that is recognized by many of the dealers at a major show (many may not know my name) I think it influences prices that are quoted to me.

I have bought 30-40K coins from a number and sellers have many times quoted me favorable prices, especially if they have had it for awhile (some only want to hold for a couple of weeks) or want to raise capital.

1 1/2 months ago dealer at next table told dealer I had just finished a Indian 2 1/2 set in 65 (all but 3 pcs). The neighbor dealer quoted me almost 15% back of bid on a 5 Indian in 64. (price on holder $200 over bid) Recently got a green sticker

I would think being a knowable collector and belonging to a first rate forum would likely take you out of the "tire kicker" group.

I believe those who are serious and bigger buyers than I would tell you the same thing.

no, never have. havent met anyone from here as of yet.

  • BryceMBryceM Posts: 11,859 ✭✭✭✭✭

I start by assuming that I have no idea what the other party is thinking. Some dealers are cash poor. Some are filthy rich. Some are selling their own stuff. Some are selling for others. Some are "owned" by other entities. Some are looking to buy, others are only looking to sell. All of that influences their half of the negotiation. Trying to figure all that out is too hard. I just want to know the price, be ethical, and have fun. Along the way I want to act so that when they see me the next time their gut reaction is a positive one.

I only mention it to those who I know are members here.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
