Original 1969-S Lincoln roll- maybe open? What would you do?

About 4 years ago I went on a tangent, and started buying original wrapped rolls of modern coins. This is one of the rolls I purchased. The elusive 1969-S DDO has a certain pull, with this roll, that is somewhat of a teaser- I guess I'm rhyming now so I'm looking for a pleaser! :p Question: If you owned this roll, what would you do? Open, or, leave intact? There is roughly 30 known examples...

    You say you got this roll four years ago. Based on MY interpretation of the odds of finding a 1969S DD in your roll, I would be willing to pay (ie) gamble $10 on the roll. If you really want to sell the roll unopened you will probably be disappointed so why not decide that waiting four years to find out is long enough. Satisfy your curiosity and open the roll now and be happy. JMHO. Steve :)

    If the price is right, I buy every roll I can of date/mint combos that have good varieties. My searches of 1969-S and 1970-S cent rolls so far haven't produced the 1969-S or 1970-S DDOs or any 1970-S small dates, but it's been fun and cheap. I'd rather spend $20 on rolls that put a $20 into a slot machine.

    I had the same roll that I picked up in 1969 or 1970 as a YN. When I got back into the hobby as an adult I pulled the roll out, opened it and looked at each coin. I found 4 coins with machine doubling on them. Poor man's 1969 Straw doubled die cents. I had more fun opening the roll and looking than what $5-10 in sales proceeds would have gotten me.

    Open it and have fun.

    To me, this doesn't look like an original bank wrapped roll from 1969. It looks like it was wrapped much, much later.

    I'm afraid that I concur. I don't think that wrapper was around in '69.

    Still, it may have been wrapped from an original bag at a later date.

    I agree with several of the above that I don't think your roll was wrapped in 1969.
    I've never seen a 69-S roll that I know was original in a white String & Son wrapper like that.
    They have all been in the brick red wrappers.
    The earliest date I have seen in a white wrapper (that I know was original) was 1972-S.
    Trust me, you will NOT find the big one, and if you can sell it for a profit, move on and don't give it another thought.

    The 72-S had such outstanding eye appeal it looked like no other 72-S I have found.

    I put away 2 rolls as a kid and looked at them recently - was surprised at the low quality of the coins! Not a single gem in the lot!

    I don't know about bank wrappers but I would open the roll and have some fun looking through them.

    I opened 2 similar rolls last year, found nothing.
    I would open it and spend about 5 minutes looking at each coin while taking a 10 minute break after every 10 coins.
    That would be 4 hours and 50 minutes of fun and relaxing anticipation.
    Just what I would do. :smile:

    Would it not be unusual for a bank in Pennsylvania to receive an origional roll from the San Francisco mint. I would imagine they would get their rolls from the nearby Philadelphia mint instead. So, I agree it is probably not an origional roll.

    Didn't realize this wasn't an original from '69 so I will go ahead and open to look for high grades, or varieties. Thanks for heads up.

    This roll has been opened before, no one would take the risk that there are the possibly DDOs inside or higher graded gems. You'd be lucky to get a few 65s. Unless you went to the mint and got it sealed away, but based on the posts above, this isn't a roll from 1969.
