You know the story. Each Christmas, Gold Coins get dropped into the Salvation Army kettles. How many of you think that these people are collectors? or do you think they are just rich and generous in giving? Thanks in advance -joey

I don't want to be cynical but I suspect the coins are planted to gather media attention.

  • If I could afford to donate this, I would think I would be better to sell and give them the money, thinking that I might get the actual value and not leave it to chance.

I would not be surprised. Probably done at least once. BTW this is an opinion. ;)

I lived in Seattle for 20 years... and every year someone would put an AGE in a Salvation Army kettle....never thought of it being a stunt... The Salvation Army is a charity I always donate to and consider it to be above such things. They are truly a charitable organization and help so many in need. Cheers, RickO

Even a cynic like me believes they are genuine donations.

Personally I would never donate anonymously since I'd miss out on the tax deduction.

Whenever I think of the Salvation Army kettles around Christmas, I think of that movie with Bob Hope, " The Lemon drop Kid". Very amusing Holiday movie with the song, Silver Bells. and of course, the kettles playing a big part of the movie. Check it out.

Not likely coin collectors, imo, but simply a good way to donate a large amount of money (value) anonymously.

A coincidence but one of our local cable channels showed "The Lemon Drop Kid" last night (December 11).

Another week or so and the annual Gold Coin drop in Seattle should make the news...usually Christmas week. Cheers, RickO

In my old hometown of Kankakee, IL the local Salvation Army gets either a AGE or a gold Maple Leaf in the kettle every year. They usually sell it to the local coin shop for cash. Its a yearly thing there.

Maybe, but unlikely, that person could be Sam Walton himself?

I wonder if anyone ever dropped a slabbed coin into the kettle. Thereby protecting it from damage/marks to protect it's value. Can't see dropping in there a potential MS 70 by a uninformed donor.

Yes, Your comment refers back to my original post! Do you think any people that drop the preverbal Gold coin into the kettle are an actual collector? Then, to answer your question, who knows? Never heard of any slabs dropped into these kettles? Presuming, the person in charge of the kettle wouldn't allow it?

I would estimate the number of non-collectors who own a Saint to be quite low.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

Sam Walton has been dead for a long time. At the time of his death I am pretty sure he was the richest person in the world. If I remember correctly after his death his 3 kids instantly became 3 of the top 5 richest people in the world.

Doubtful it was a Wal-Mart big wig. The story stated that the generous benefactor called the store manager to make the arrangements then had an assistant personally drop off a check to the store. Maybe though. $50k is very cheap advertising for such a viral story.

What a brilliant marketing scheme. If someone started paying off random Walmart's layaways I would assume people might choose Walmart over Target, etc... if there is a slim chance someone might pay them off for you.
