Jefferson Nickel Variety of the Week - 1971 DDO-001 DISCOVERY
Forum Crew, I posed on this variety back in February 2012 after being discovered. Since then I have seen nor heard of another example surfacing. It seems pretty hard to believe there are not many more out there! In the lead up to the Cherry Pickers 6th Edition publication, I even had hopes this variety would be selected. It seems like a perfect variety for the Guide, as it is a pretty obvious Double Die and the fact that there are very few modern (post 1964) business strike, really nice varieties overall. I never got real excited about the few that are in the Guide: 2004-P Peace DDO, 2005-P Bison DDO and the 2005-D Speared Bison. A pretty weak display of varieties in my opinion! This 1971 DDO would have been a killer addition to the Guide for the modern year varieties. I would even have added the 1968-D/D RPM-001 or the 1981-D DDR-001 before the 3 that made it!
As always, happy hunting!

Good luck with that Dimeman, you'll have to search 1000s to find a 1971 Philly in change.
Supercool variety, I have not turned one up yet despite a rather extensive search.
This one might be very rare.
Did not realize that....sorta like looking for the 1967 DDO Dime.
Another educational thread by Bigdowgie. Your keeping me busy looking through my stuff.
Thanks again
Yes but I'm just talking about finding ANY 1971 Philly 5c in change.
CladKing may want to add his 5c here, but for me it is the scarcest "modern" nickel to find circulating (not counting 2009 P/D).
Shazam.... there is another added to my list of snowy day searches through jugs of coins.... Cheers, RickO
BigDog, was this coin found in a mint set? Do you know?
Sticks out like a sore thumb!

That is interesting. I was looking through my change earlier and came across a '71.
Didn't check the mint mark. Not sure why I even remember the date but I do.
Nice!
