Had an itch. Had to rip. 1977 Topps football wax box bonanza.
For the past couple weeks I have been itching to rip some packs. I kept looking through my unopened collection looking for an excuse to pull a box off the shelf and decided on a 1977 Topps Football box I bought about a year ago on Ebay. It was not certified by BBCE, but the seller had very good feedback and I took a chance. 1977 is an underappreciated year imo and has a number of important cards. It is Steve Largent's rookie year of course and he was one of my all-time favorite receivers. Also, it has the second year card for Walter Payton and a number of other Hall of Fame greats. I will be opening packs here and there over the next few weeks. Today I opened four packs and I am very happy with the condition of the cards so far and hope to pull some high grade examples for submission and will be posting pics as thy come.

Damn Cool! I've ripped 1 77FB pack and have another slated for 12/31...but a whole box!?! Awesome! It's a great year IMO.
Staubach looks pretty good already and I had a tough time finding a nice one for my registry set.
Good luck with the rest.
very nice!
Good luck!!
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
i agree 1977 is a great fb pack year...love the yellow wrapper.
I can't believe 1977 was nearly 40 years ago now. I know I am stating the obvious, but it seems like just a few years ago I was ripping packs from the early 80s as a kid. I was 4 years old when these packs came out and watching players like Payton and Largent growing up so it is a real walk down memory lane.
I know. I get that same sense of "I can't believe it's been that long" everytime I get a card in my hands for the first time. I usually end up going down the worm hole that is hockeydb.com.
Time keeps on ticking, ticking
Into the future............

Best of luck with the RIP. Looking forward to seeing the results.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
one of my favorite years. Love the look of the card and those 1000 yard rushing cards were always my favorite as a kid. opening a box like this and seeing those cards pack fresh would be the highlight of my collecting. I'm very envious!
That has to be Staubach's best looking card!!
Wow, good luck on the rip. If you hit a Largent RC you would want to move I'd love to have a pack fresh card in my PC (in any condition).

Not a bad way to solve a itch. I always used Gold Bold Medicated. I use it for deodorant protection and that cool, refreshing feeling. In addition to its triple action relief to cool, absorb, and relieve itch
does anyone have special secure storage for wax boxes or just keep them in a cardboard box or rubbermaid tub?
i was thinking of a pelican type case for my most expensive box but thought that might be overkill
I keep my valuable boxes in this.
More pack rippage.. Pack fresh Lynn Swann and Leroy Selmon HOF rookie.
Like that Selmon card!
Next pack..
One of my favorite sets. Keep scanning.
Thanks,

Yes. I have only opened 5 packs. More to come. Opening a couple packs every couple days as time allows and spreading out the excitement. Nothing looking ripping open a 40 year old pack to spice up your day and a little fun.
I had no idea. Wow.
Opened 4 more packs. I was bummed to see the Theismann with gum on the back, Big score with the Payton. More to come. Still waiting on the Largent!
That Payton has near perfect centering.
Very nice - thanks for sharing!
Awesome! Saw Mel Gray in high school! He still holds a lot of track and field records there. IMO you should save one pack for PSA to grade as the gum looks great!
Nice Payton
Interested in the raw cards if you are selling - please email me at briapf@mac.com - thanks, Peter.
P.S. - does anyone know how to PM in the updated page? Thanks!
If interested in selling the Payton contact me.
Thanks
me too!
I never realized how many others on the forum had an interest in 70s football.
PFB, rexvos,49ersGuy I may consider trying to put together a set with these if I can pick up another box but I will let you know if I get some nice doubles or if I scrap the set idea.
Here is a video of me ripping a pack...

Interesting, no team logos on the helmets.
Awesome thread! My first cards I opened in football in the fall of 1977!
I need to upgrade a Bobby Bryant to Mint grade and Foreman to Mint grade. I would assume the Foreman you pulled has wax stains on it?
Erik
There were no logos from 71-81 due to no deal with NFL just NFLPA
Foreman does have wax on the front. I will look for a Bobby Bryant
Finally got my Largent. Beautifully centered and sharp corners. I was getting nervous I wouldn't get one. Only 5 packs left.
Beautiful card!!
Very sharp looking Largent
Cory
I would buy the cards you don't want to build a nice raw set for my collection. Keep me/us posted.
Erik
Congrats on the Largent!

Cool thread sush. 70's football has a huge following and the 77's with the 1,000 yarder designation cards have always been popular. I would rank them as 71 first, 72 second, and possibly 77 third for best 70's Football cards.
Successful card BST transactions with cbcnow, brogurt, gstarling, Bravesfan 007, and rajah 424.
Awesome Largent pull !! Congrats.
