Silly labels have finally gone too far

So I get my daily email from govmint.com, and I see we now slab generic bullion coins with the next level of absurdity. Cubs win the world series, and NGC immediately certifies ASE's and $5 AGE's with a silly Cubs label. What connection does baseball have to do with the coins? The year they won? C'mon! I'm over it already.
I hope this doesnt catch on. Election year eagles, superbowl champion eagles, Joe Blow's 75th birthday eagles, etc. Pollutes the whole hobby with all of these "special" labels.

Isn't using sports a good way to get kids interested in coins? Make great gifts for nephews and nieces at Christmas. What's the harm?

FYI - I believe only NGC can use official MLB logos on labels as they paid for that right.

The 2014 Baseball Hall of Fame Dollars certified by PCGS in the Hall of Fame player Signature Label holders were far more collectible on a demographic basis. The new NGC labels are hardly marketable on as broad a demographic.

People pay for it, so they do it.
I think the "seasoned" collectors don't do them, but there are others that think they are cool and these folks are likely just someone spending a little bit of $ for "fun". Kind of like buying a hat with a sports team logo that one just buys and puts somewhere in the house but doesn't wear.

Maybe someone buying as a gift for a fan as no true collector would buy one for themselves ;)

Lame, but I can see how it would appeal to the noncollecting public, so I don't really blame 'em for trying to cash in.

If I were a Cubs fan (and I'm not a sports fan at all), I suppose I would rather have one of those than a lot of souvenirs, but yeah... it is rather silly.

What surprises me is how FAST, though. They must've had this stuff ready in advance, which presumes there were also labels made proclaiming the Indians as the champions? Now that would be the one to have, if any escaped. Sorta like the "Dewey Defeats Truman" newspapers.

Imagine a Cleveland Indians label with an Indian gold coin inside. That would be trippy.

I agree that coin collectors will ignore these labels for the most part. However for the portion of the population that doesn't collect coins this might be a great find for them to give/get as gift for sports lovers of all ages. Hell might even bring a few more collectors into the industry. So personally I find them annoying, but think of the positives.

I see it as a larger, overall problems with both tpgs.

While I'm generally in the pre-1830 era, I've dabbled in some modern pieces. I found the five ounce pucks fun in specimen form. Inexpensive, pretty.

But the values are all over the board, and for the very same coins.

Non-first strike (which is the same coin as a first strike), First Strike, Signed by Mercanti, First Strike COMBINED with Mercanti sig, Roosevelt label...

And different perceived values attributed to each.

While I love our early Federal coinage, I may end up dumping my entire collection, as NONE are available with a Scot or Rittenhouse signature.

While a few special labels may be fun toward bringing young people into the hobby, it's gone way too far.

But why stop with one team?

We could have a baseball team marketing scheme for old US commemorative half-dollars.

For example, this one would be a "twofor", for the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics:

Well, it seems to me that there is STILL some empty space on most slabs.
Until it is ALL used up, I would think that anyone who can come up with a label that people will PAY for still has an opportunity.

When you really think about it, anything in the world is only "worth" what someone decides to pay for it.

This is just one example of a continuum that extends to infinity in both directions. IMHO, there is no "line" that this particular item crosses in order to "go too far" in an absolute sense, although, to the OP, I do recognize and respect your opinion.

I would ask you, without the reference to the Cubs event, the rest of the item is on the "okay" side of your personal line?

From my point of view, there is no interest in any of it, and that includes the "coin" at any price over current melt value

You may think these are silly, but I think they are fun. Just may order one too. GO CUBBIES!!!

The labels I never understood are the Miles Standish labels. Why would anyone want a label with his signature? Just cause he worked at the grading company? I guess it could be some inside joke I'm not part of. At least some of the other autograph labels like Mercanti or Moy have something to do with the actual coins.

As long as we have fun with our coins :)

The real " Myles Standish" has been dead for 360 years , a slab with his signature would be worth something. It would probably prove to be fake though since plastic hadn't been invented then.

The point of my post is not to suggest that people should or shouldnt have the right to buy what they want.
    Hell, this is America.
I just think it is silly, more absurd than paying for a label with a First strike designation which means absolutely nothing.
The more people begin to focus on these decorative labels, the less attention is paid to the coins themselves. Coins! Remember when it was about those things?
Not a big deal, really. I just get tired of all the marketing BS

"Pollutes the whole hobby with all of these "special" labels."

Both TPG's do this, singling out one is hypocritical................

Personally, if someone wishes to buy a coin for the label, I feel it is their right and it is not polluting the hobby. What pollutes the hobby is folks that go about ragging on because others don't have the same tastes as them in numismatics.......

In fact, by marketing coins this way to others that may not necessarily be into numismatics, it may actually turn them into numismatists. Wow, imagine that.

Who is singling out a TPG? I'm just showing you an email from govmint.com. I'm well aware that "label madness" has infected all of the major TPGs.
The labels, spacehayduke, really dont define someone's taste in numismatics (which is about collecting coins.)
Of course people can buy what they like.
But again, what do the Cubs have to do with the coins? I think (and it is my opinion) that all the stupid variations in labels cheapens the brand.

No worries, we can disagree on this one. When the Giants won the Series, the same flood of Giant labels occurred from both TPG's and boy was I tempted. But I am not into modern bullion coins. This kind of marketing for bullion coins will get grandma's buying a coin for a grandson that may not otherwise know anything about coins. So there is a positive outcome.
