I got my first NGC Star graded coin.
These opportunities don't come along often, so I grabbed it.
I think that I will like it in hand....we'll see.
Looks like orange and copper to me.
Thoughts and/or opinions will be greatly appreciated.

My impression is that it will have more obverse luster in-hand than the images suggest.

Looks good, I agree it will look better in hand, the orange and rose type hues are always really hard to capture effectively on pictures for Walkers.

Love star toners myself! Got quite a few including a Walker. Congrats on the addition.
Star ATS is all about eye appeal. I'm going to guess that there's more colors in hand than what the pictures suggest. Let us know when it gets there.
Nice score. As TomB suggested maybe it got that more for the luster blast than the toning. ??? I showed a similarly toned NGC MS67 CAC seated half to PCGS and the comments I got were that the original apricot/russet/silvery mottled toning was a slight negative on that coin. Hence no cross despite very blasty luster pools. Usually it takes blast white or a rainbow mixture of colors to get the * at NGC. Blues, reds, greens, vibrant yellows usually required if not blast white. I would suspect that most * coins come from BU Morgans, Walkers, Mercs, Roosies, Washingtons, and War nickels....where price spreads are modest. I wouldn't bother with a cross as the odds are probably 10% or less. You'll end up behind the 8 ball trying for that. A 66* CAC is what I'd shoot for.
Thanks. I have no intention of crossing it, as I really like the star and it already has a green bean now, too. The top images look almost black and white and they don't show the color. I can't wait to see this baby in hand. I bet it has decent color and wicked luster. It looks to have a great strike, too.

Congrats!! The pops of star coins are down by about 50 recently as almost all mine have new PCGS tombs. All crossed or pluses. The old NGC * labels are taped to the back of the new slabs. And they will be marketed that way

Branch hand and head look like a good strike. Can't tell everything due to the toning, but right field and sun look good. Liberty's right arm and hip look nice. The reverse features great luster - so the obverse luster will likely positively accentuate the toning when viewed in hand.
Probably will be one of those coins that give a color show when tilted in the light.
Nice thing about a coin like yours is undisputed originality. Congratulations on your 'star' attraction.

They are so tough on star designations these days. I am surprised that one made it. In the old days, everything with any hint of a rainbow got a star. I suppose it could be a regrade from an old star. I am not a fan of that toning so maybe it's the intense luster, NGC description is below.
NGC assigns its trademarked Star Designation to coins with exceptional eye appeal for their assigned grade.
Eye appeal is the most subjective attribute of a coin, but there are many standards shared by numismatists. Exceptional eye appeal may include attributes such as vibrant, colorful toning; intense luster; or, in the case of Proof coins, especially strong cameo contrast. To receive a , coins must be free of any obvious planchet irregularities, and display no bothersome spots or blemishes. Toned coins can be of a single color or multicolored but cannot have any areas that are dark brown, approaching black.
It's important to remember that coins with the Star () Designation can fall anywhere within the grades to which they are assigned. For example, a coin graded NGC MS 64 could be at the lower end, mid-range or higher end of NGC MS 64.
NGC applies the to qualifying coins in its normal course of grading. As they are already of the ultimate grade, any coin graded NGC MS 70 or NGC PF 70 will not be eligible for the . Coins already certified by NGC can be resubmitted and reviewed for using the Designation Review service.
Well, I received the coin on Saturday, so I spent a relaxing hour that afternoon examining it and viewing it.
The toning is not too deep or dark and, when held in the light; I do see some distinctive cinnamon, cherry reds and fiery oranges that you just never see.
It has a wonderful strike, even for such a well produced issue----it is far above average.
I see full-blown originality, as this coin has not been fooled with. Truly original Walkers are a much sought after and hot commodity, these days.
There's great luster on both the obverse and the reverse.
I like the fact that both NGC and John Albanese of CAC liked it, too.
This may not be a coin for everyone.....but me? I love the appeal of it and definitely can see why it got the STAR. I am all about uniqueness and rarity and this Walker is truly a one-of-a-kind piece. No way that I can send it back. I can't stop looking at it and admiring it and I think that it would really benefit from professional images.
Finally, I want to give a shout out and thank you to Tom Caldwell of Northeast Numismatics for giving me the opportunity to own this piece, at a decent price. I have always liked his offerings and have visited his site MANY times, so I knew that it was just a matter of time before we hooked up on a deal.
